I think Madonna outshined Michael Jackson during the 80s but only with a slight margin. Being a M.J. fan during the punk era... I don't want to agree with it but records (the whole of the 80s) showed that......

Each of them got ONE album at the top ten number one ALBUMS of the 80s....
Madonna's album "Like a Virgin" and Michael Jackson's album "Thriller". For these they are equal
BUT....
Michael Jackson didn't even hit a single song in the top ten SINGLES of the 80s. Madonna did with her "Like A Virgin"single that stayed six weeks at number one.

Ok...ok.... most of us guys enjoyed MJs songs.Some of us then might have even followed the way he suited up and danced "MJ wannabes", but on the other hand, there were also a lot of gals during that time who also copied the madonna way . There were also a lot of Madonna wannabes then, and by Statistics... the female human specie outnumbers the male human specie by 3:1... So guys we were outnumbered by our female counterparts by then. So for these reasons..... I think Madonna did more damage than Michael Jackson did during the 80s.
