guys, i need your suggestions on giving me specs/parts for a complete package for a PC unit - my budget would have to be around 20-25k.
here's some of my preferences: - i still dont trust a celeron (as far as i know it slows down through age?!) henceforth i prefer a P4. - im not really much of a speed/fancy/coolness freak as durability and performance is all i need - for use of managing/basic editing of images (rotate, resize, etc) - use for DSL browsing through the internet - 15 inch LCD or basic monitor is fine by me. - no need for expensive soundcard stuff - burning to CDR-RW / DVD-RW/R/+R/-R for back (pls enlighten me on this one) - multiple ports/fast transfer of files from USB flash drives - at least 5 years life (i'll invest on a 512mb memory) - good decent video card - im not a gamer at the PC, thats my PS2's job. - i already have a cd-rw dvd rom combo (lite-on) that i never used for more than a year already

my suggestions: processors: AMD Athlon64 3200 or 3800 would be good (cheaper compared to intel and better, im planning to switch to amd when DualCore hits philippines ;D ) mem: 512MB DDR PC400 would suffice ;D video card: geforce / radeon ( mid level type, you dont need high-end ones for gamings ) sound card: umm built in? monitor: LCD is good (price for space freedom ;D but price would range 10k???) writer/burner: u may invest on dvd burners.. its getting cheeper now and can write on cd-r also usb port: USB 2 is the latest so far

I'd recommend AMD Sempron if your budget is below 25k. There are many factors that causes to PC to slow down, not just the processor. Get a motherboard with a good chipset.

all PCs slow down as time goes by. that's because of all the programs and garbage thats being accumulated. that's why from time to time you need to reformat your harddisk for it to run fast again.

With your budget, you cant exactly get a durable PC if your monitor is a 15" LCD! Unless you can spare a separate budget for it, you can build a PC to die for with that budget! ;D The AMD Athlon64 is good plus its cheaper than Pentiums. A 512MB DDR PC 400 PQI would do also. Video cards and sound cards depends on your preference and your use so I cant exactly tell you what to get. The DVD writes are going down as what Chaoz said so go for it! I suggest you check out PC Express. They are chaeaper compared to other PC stores! ;D

There's a rule in assembling a PC, you never have too much of disk space, so get the biggest one you can afford, specially that you mentioned it's for DSL use. Some newer motherboards have network interface already built-in. Pentium 4 processors are more expensive than their AMD counterpart for the same performance.

Hmmm for Intel Pentium line of PC naman a very good one is that you need an HT or Hyper Threading here you can do whatever you want mapaburn ka ng CD download something on the net in other words super multi-tasking with out any hiccups hehehe ....
Here goes Pentium's are a bit pricey compared to Athlon because Pentiums are build for applications. Prices were taken from PCXpress
Processor -- Intel 630 (3.0G) 2mb HT LGA775 ---- 10,450 Memory -- 512MB DDR400 -- 2500 Motherboard -- Intel i915PGN PCI-E /SATA/S/DDR400 --- 4850 VideoCard -- Inno3D 6200 PCI-E 128mb ---4650 Harddisk -- 160GB Seagate 7200 SATA --- 5450
Total Price is --- 27900
See the difference between AMD or Intel. Intel is a little bit pricey ;D
Hope this helps for you when you are looking for an Intel line ... ;D

hi V2!
AMD works for me too... since meron ka naman PS2 for gaming... i doubt that ur PC would slow down... unless u put TONS of programs/applications...
my usual problem: masipag ako mag install ng games and other programs...
kaya wag mo ito gayahin V2... hehehe... good luck!!!!!

AMD would be best pricewise... budget lang talaga nagkakatalo...
as far as long term usage... buo pa yung pentium MMX ko na 166Mhz overclocked to 200Mhz from college pa, assembled ko around 1995 **eeeee... ang tanda ko na pala!!!**... pati yung AMD K6-2 500Mhz overclocked to 550, assembled 1999... tong computer ko nga rin ngayon, acer veriton P4 1.3Ghz, eh magpo-4 years old na rin but still running with out a problem, and without anything being replaced...
basta no matter what kind of computer ang makuha mo, keep it in a cool and not so dusty place, guaranteed long term tagal nyan... kalaban talaga ang alikabok, mapa electronics or toys...
as far as pagbagal... ang suspect dyan is yung mga applications... as you install new applications with higher requirements on older computers, babagal talaga...
btw... pasok sa budget yung quote for the AMD system... kaso wala monitor. hehehe...

sorry, can't make a direct or any good advice para sa magiging bagong mong setup na PC. ;D eto lang masasabi ko sa iyo!
Intel Pentium 4HT Processor: expensive, 3yrs. warranty(ask your dealer) good for application and video editing...
AMD Processor: less expensive compare to Intel, good for application and gaming.
reliable din sila just make it a habit to maintain your PC from time to time.
read reviews, recommendation of motherboards for your processor, i suggest to use google search.
if you have an extra budget to spare.. try investing on a good motherboard with a good chipset! siya kasi ang mag mamanage ng mga processor, memory, hdd, optical drives mo eh...
memory: since you'll be doing an image editing, more memory is much better! try to start with 512mb then later kung may budget pa.. upgrade!
video card: nvidia or ati, basta 128mb and 128bit or mas mataas pa. OK!
monitor: some people say pag image/picture, CAD design or mga 3D layout application they still prefer to use the old CRT monitor than LCD. Pero ganda japorms ng mga LCD monitor!! space saving pa and not to mention tipid sa kuryente ang LCD yun lang nga medyo mahal pa din.
hard disc drive: kung may extra cash ka pa! bili ka ng SATA drives with large capacity since sigurado ako marami kang d-download sa DSL mo. heheh
DVD-/+R writer: are getting cheaper na.. invest ka narin dito.
USB2.0 ports are good for your thumb drives or external enclosure for your hdd.
and don't forget to invest on a good and reliable power supply!
Lan Card: try to avoid those cheap prices... a good lan card will also make a difference. If you ask me, I like Linksys brand. bagay na bagay sa DSL mo! (Dial Sabay Log-in) LOLZ! (cisco,3com and linksys brand ay medyo mahal ng kaunti)
also look for a casing with good ventilation.. lalo na kung minsan magdamag na naka bukas yan! add ka narin ng mga cooling fans para hindi gaano uminit yung PC mo sa loob.
