I can't get enough of this series and with good reason. The iconic leader of the Autobots/Cybertrons and his never ending battle against the forces of evil, the selfless drive to end a war no matter what the cost is simply too............................corny but awe inspiring.
Anyway, I made my own top 10 Convoys from all generations (be free to add your own 10 best ;D) beginning from the least great but made the grade to the awesome numero UNO!
10. Micron Legend/Armada:
First time I saw him in Toyfare, I said awesome............back to the red, white and blue! Supermode looked great too, the remote control transform gimmick really was the main selling point.
Once I purchased him though, kinda disappointed with the mold and colors/articulation. Very cruddy mold too (for both US and Japanese).
Micron gimmick and his interlink with Jetfire and Ultra Magnus/Overload was his saving grace.
9. Lio Convoy:
Beast wars japanese style..............mixed bag of sorts. Very poseable but his organic parts and facemold was kinda a turn off. (His Robot Master version face kicks @ss.) Also, he lacked the Maximal hologram in his chamber that was advertised in his box.
8. Superlink/Energon:
Grand Convoy, I bought two versions of this obese Cybertron. The first release (Hasbro) had dull colors and a mouth. Saving grace were the electronic sounds of a siren, construction drill, chopper sound and submarine sonar. Plus Flashing lights(Matrix flash?)
Japanese version had a much improved color scheme, chrome, no mouth but lost the sound effects(bummer ) He looked awesome in his Supermode with Wing Saber. It tended to offset his stubby figure. But his Superlink with Omega Supreme SUCKED like eggs.
7.RID /Car Robots
Fire Convoy (I have the US version) was quite big. Fully articulated and had some great sound effects. Transform mode for default and supermode kicked @ss! Omega Prime really looked menacing (kinda like Combattler with steroids.). One thing I hated though.........the wheels tended to crack .
6. God Ginrai /Powermaster Optimus Prime
I first owned the ugly US version. I called it ugly 'cause once I saw the japanese version ( hands were painted blue and the chest cab had a red paint and the leggs were colored aluminum silver) in the japanese catalog, I felt short changed. His head seemed kinda oversized.
Later (thanks to Star TV) I learned he had another Supermode with God Bomber. It restored some proportional issues that I had with him. Takara even remolded him with additional diecast and adjustable fists. Now this is what Convoy should be......BIG and MEAN! Excellent re-issue!
5.Big Convoy
Another japanese exclusive. When I saw him in transformed mode of a mammoth, I asked myself....where the heck is Convoy? Once transformed though...........AWESOME! Very articulated, great face sculp and a Matrix to boot.! ;D
4. Star Convoy
I've been praying for one since 1991. Finally got one this October. No much articulated, more blocky as opposed to Ginrai but more than worth its wait in gold!
Improved from the original flat white and red to the metallic aluminum finish and red gloss. Chromed Star symbol and metallized labels (no more yellowing ;D) Plus Hotrod had his flame symbols painted on (no peal off). Great gimmick if Takara will release Grandus and Skygarry to form Battlestars.
3. Galaxyforce/Cybertron
The best modern version of Prime. Proportional, fully articulated, comes with a matrix(not chromed though ) plus homage to lots of previous Convoys.) Comes with a mouth and face shield. Great gimmick of superlinking with Ligerjack and Sonic Bomber.
2. Masterpiece Convoy/Robotmaster Convoy
The anime accurate version since Action Masters. A great engineering feat to be able to create a truck cab and hide it all during the transformation process. ( I included robot Masters since he is basically the mini-me version). Great presentation too (for the japanese version) with the rifle, mini Megatron,Matrix and enrgon axe).
1. Convoy /Optimus Prime circa 1984
Who wouldn't forget the seminal design from the diaclone era? Sure, blocky as a rock with minimal articulation, the European tractor trailer with a robot transformation, red, white and blue plus the base ball capped, samurai face shielded warrior who we all now com to love as Convoy. Already a cultural icon...."Autobots roll out" or the quote.................."freedom is the right of ALL sentient beings" (thanks to Bob Budianski).............who wouldn't want to rate him less than numero uno?
