I never owned the original "Skull Leader" Hasbro/Takara/ Bandai version way back in 1985 but no way I could pass out on this one. ;D
Bio: Follows the anime storyline of his being trapped in the Arctic around 5 millions years ago (whereas in the Marvel Comic he was manufactured by Shockwave)
Contents:
Jetfire vehicle, helmet, twin arm booster/launchers, 2 missles, "scramjet" backpack, double barreled weapon(can be split into two), instruction manual.
Now my review:
Vehicle mode ............modified F-14A Grumman Tomcat. The homage to the Valkyrie is very apparent but this is no lazy copy.
Unlike the Valkyrie, he has two stabilizer fins on his back , the nose cone too kind of looks awkward that it is angular........very similar to Six-shot's jet mode. But you'll understand why when you transform him. Also, I noticed his cockpit has an instrument/control panel included.
Don't know why (copy right issues? ) but my sore sticking point is that his arms stick out of his sides, unlike the Valkyrie wherein you fold it in the middle.
Another homage to Macross is that his particle beam cannons which comprise his helmet also is conviniently attached under the fuselage.
His scramjets(backpack quoting the original Bob Budianski data files) are clip ons. It is spring mounted that when you pull the barrels back ward the cannons pop out.
Also his rear boosters are also independently directed.
I am making a comparison to the Toynami Veritech ver concerning this flaw to the former, my dig against the Toynami Masterpiece is that this Jetfire's foot modules opens up independently from each other while Toynami............zilch. Some Masterpiece huh?
I have some prejudices against the Hasbro International Product, but lo and behold, the molding and paint job is superb ( red, black and white) . Very minute blemishes so........maybe, if a Japanese repaint does arrive, it had got to be worth the repurchase. Also, there is the Autobot rubsymbol on his left wing.
Robot Mode:
Very reminiscent of the anime and most recently Stormbringer.
Poseable with the exception of his arms, you can't do a 360 on the joints horizontally.
What really kicks@ss is his pseudo Macross helmet, again, homage to Figueroa's Dreamwave and IDW designs. It is composed of light blue plastic, painted over. The two particle cannons are moveable, .........and fragile so be careful breaking them.
With the helmet comes the critique, his head without the helmet is also kick@ss, and proportional, but once the head is on, it kind of looks misproportioned ( like God Ginrai ) Also, the head, similar to previous Takara creations, his eyes light up thanks to the light sourced crystal on the back of his head.
Cost measures aside, wished he were much bigger(?) hah! like the original Macross.................very picky no?
Buy or don't buy?..........................................DON'T .........NOT?
