This is my take on the Transformers Classics Optimus Prime. I just got this figure along with TF Classics Megatron as a Christmas present for myself. Here's the lowdown.
Packaging/Box
The packaging is almost the same size as with a Cybertron Voyager Class figure although the TF Classics box is a bit smaller. Here I compare it with the box of Cybertron Soundwave.
The box art from the TF Classics is noticeably absent which would have made this better. The figure is secured by wires so be careful when removing the figure. Overall the box/packaging is good there's even a gimmick -- the flip to reveal robot mode however, in my opinion this is unnecessary as the alternate and robot mode is clearly printed on the back -- it could have been used in a different way. If you are an observer then you'd notice at the back that Optimus was mistransformed at the leg/knee area where the knee caps should have been folder upwards like in the instructions. Don't know if they made a mistake or what.
The face of Prime printed at the back is somewhat different too. Prime looks like Voltes V to me with the way the faceplate was made or was it lighting effect?
Score: 3 / 5 Stars
Truck Mode/Alternate Mode
The truck mode is really good. They have updated Prime's truck mode to blend in todays sort of current truck designs.
Wind shields are slanted and there's even a wind vane just like what you see in today's trucks, you can even see the seats through the wind shields for detailing. Unfortunately, the trailer is absent which in my opinion would have made this figure really standout. I don't know if there's even a possibility of a "complete/perfect Classics Optimus Prime" but I could not find a peg or locking mechanism that will create a bit of hope that a trailer can be made for this figure. Nevertheless, truck mode is really good and let's keep our fingers crossed for that trailer. ;D
Score: 3.5 / 5 Stars
Robot Mode
If you liked the truck mode then the robot mode you'll find better. It's probably one of the best Optimus Prime mould out there today. It's almost the same size as a Cybertron Voyager class figure.
Prime's arms and legs including the torso are well proportioned. Surprisingly, the transformation from Robot to truck mode is clever too. It's almost the same as the traditional G1 prime transformation but with a little twist -- hats off to those engineers. ;D Good job guys whoever you are. The figure's articulation is very good too. I manage to pose Prime in different good poses. The smokestacks which you can detach to form this gun is a nice touch while the wind vane converts to his ion riffle/canon.
Score: 4.5 /5 Stars
What I don't like:
Now, there's no perfect figure and here are some of the things I don't like about this Optimus Prime.
- The face place modification. Now I know a lot of you won't agree but in my opinion this Prime looks like Grimlock to me with that changes on his face plate and the overall face design. The crescent on his forehead is a bit large and his nose is almost not in anyway noticeable unless you really look closer.
- The kibble on his arms that acted as sort of shields.
- The autobot symbol is missing on his left shoulder. There's no visible Autobot logo when he's in robot mode.
Overall:
Overall the figure is highly recommended. If you get the chance to own this figure then don't let it pass you. Get it now! ;D
