The idea was to beat the price of P5k for an Optimus+Wing Saber.
I got a Wing Saber for P2k at the Dec Collectibles Toy Fair in Mega and I stumbled upon Mazingaa Zeto's "Galaxy Force Optimus Prime" that he was selling at a good price.
I figured that there had been reviews of Optimus + Wing Saber using the regular "blue legs" Prime. Here's something different: Optimus Prime Sonic Wing Mode using the "black and red" Prime
Angled view:
Front view:
I prefer to keep the wings closed. It creates a more compact figure.
Torso close-up:
This is how he looks like with the wings deployed:
Wing Saber is a replacement backpack for Optimus. This is how it basically looks like when the backpack is removed:
These are the alt modes that are produced with the Sonic Wing combo. As you can see, Optimus can still make a decent truck and Wing Saber is complete:
WING SABER
Wing Saber's alt mode is an A-10 plane. Yes, just color him blue and you can pass him off as one of those old Cobra Rattler planes
Inserting the cyberplanet key behind the cockpit opens up the front part of the plane to "reveal heavy blaster cannons and hyperdrive ram-scoop". Whatever it is, I just imagine it to be one of those BFG guns commonly seen in anime where the beam is as wide as the gap between the 2 halves that seperated.
Anyway, according to his write-up this is supposed to be his "warp system".
Wing Saber in robot mode:
Close up:
As you can probably see, Wing Saber's whole front part of the plane becomes his backpack. The light and sound feature is located at the front part and along with it are the 2 AAA batteries. Hence, this is a back-heavy robot. To add to that, not all of the joints in his hips are ratchet joints. In short, I couldn't make this 'bot do a decent crouching position.
The "heavy blaster cannons and hyperdrive ram-scoop" can be swung forward and over Wing Saber's head. There is a stand located at the 'bot's collar which is designed to hold up the front end of the plane when it's swung over the head (the peg is undocumented, though).
Close up:
Wing Saber is a HUGE plane that has weird proportions and scale on its own. He's mostly white, metalic brown/gray and accented with red and gray. Being a gundam fan, I'm soooo tempted to pannel-line the white parts of the plane just to bring out the details. In robot mode, he's back heavy. Someone must have cut some corners coz the front swivel of his hips aren't ratchet joints. He's got a load of weapons (which I didn't bother take pics off) and got a number of pegs and hole here and there that can have you mix 'n match parts.
If you have a Prime and quite tired at looking at him in his super mode, then get Wing Saber. He's an Ultra class 'bot so I wouldn't suggest paying +P500 more than you would for an ultra class toy.
GALAXY FORCE OPTIMUS PRIME
Yep, that's the official name even though he's part of the Cybertron toy line and not the Galaxy Force toy line. He's the "after war" Prime where there's unity already hence the absence of the autobot symbol on his shoulders. They've been replaced by the 4 planet symbols. Try to imagine him as the leader class version of the "planet keys variant" deluxe bendy Prime (remember those?)
His alt mode is a fire truck. With a red and dark gray/black 2-tone color scheme, he makes a decent fire truck:
He comes with a nice gold and black cyberplanet key. Inserting it on the thin cannon deploys the 2 missiles at the sides:
Inserting it in the bigger cannon opens it up and causes some light and sound gimmick. Pulling it out closes the gun:
Prime's cyberplanet keys are found on these 2 cannons which are essentially "add-ons" to Prime. The Optimus robot itself does not have any cyberplanet key feature.
Flying Truck mode:
As some of you may have noticed, my Prime has a factory defect. The front grill on one shoulder is not painted silver! I guess it's time to bring out the gundam marker to even up the paint.
This is Prime in regular mode:
Here's Prime in super mode:
Close up:
Now, dropping off his backpack and attaching Wing Saber to create the Sonic Wing Mode:
As you can see, since Wing Saber is back heavy, Sonic Wing Mode now becomes VERY back heavy. Prime Super Mode is back heavy already that they had to attach extenders to the back of his lower legs to balance him out -- and to this, Wing Saber's rocket launchers are also added to further support the Sonic Wing Mode.
Even with the leg extentions and ratcheting hips, he still tends to lean back:
Swinging Wing Saber's "heavy blaster cannons and hyperdrive ram-scoop" over Prime's back adds more firepower to this mode (undocumented)!
With the exception of the yellow parts of Wing Saber, this combo works very very well. Prime's dark parts complement Wing Saber's dark parts perfectly! The colors you get to see are the dark metalic plastics, the metalic red of Prime, the white of Wing Saber and the various accents of gray (on Prime and Wing Saber) and the yellow on Wing Saber.
As a side note, Nemesis/Leo Breaker cannot be combined to Sonic Wing Mode. There is no space at the back for Prime shoulder to swing back to reveal the slot to place in Nemesis/Leo Breaker.
