Metroplex was one of my frustrations with regards to the G1 toys. I couldn't afford one then and surprizingly, I still can't afford a G1 Metroplex these days. When I saw that there would be a TF in the Cybertron line that was going to be named "Metroplex", I was excited -- it was payback time for me and I was finally going to have "Metroplex".
Alas, things fell short of expectations. Instead of a metropolis transforming to a robot, we get this image of an industrial monolith that transforms into a robot.
I've read a handful of reviews and heard lots of comments about the Cybertron Metroplex. A lot of the negative comments deal with his vague alt mode. A lot of the rave comments deal with how good a robot he is. Since he was on 10% start-of-the-year sale, I decided to take a gamble and buy one.
Metroplex's alt mode is supposed to be an excavator. I'm going to leave it at that:
The unique part of Metroplex is that he has 2 modes which may look the same but are interestingly distinct from each other. From the alt mode comes the "brute" or work mode. I guess this is what he looks like when he goes about his daily business.
The shovel/excavator wheel becomes an axe -- it's HUGE and I just prefer to set it aside most of the time.
Here is Metroplex in a height comparisson with Optimus in Sonic Bomber mode:
When it's time to lay some smackdown, Metroplex transforms from work mode to battle mode -- unfold the legs, unfold the torso, slide the shoulder up and he now towers waaaay above other leader class figs.
Yes, he can still hold the axe due to a peg on his hand:
Size comparisson with Optimus:
He has ratchet joints all over! The only moving parts without ratchet joints are the neck, the wrists, the antenas and those blue flaps on him.
He's also got minicon ports all over:
Aside from being on sale, why did I buy Metroplex? Well, I was thinking that my background in Gundams would have me appreciate a robot as it is and possibly ignore the alt mode. He does not disappoint -- he's very very posable and can hold a pose thanks to his ratchet joints and WIDE feet.
This wouldn't be a Metroplex discussion without fanmodes.
Here's my take on Metroplex having "better" proportions. It gives him the height but doesn't make his torso look too skinny:
This mode was done by having the legs go "batte mode" and having the upper torso go "brute mode".
As you can see, he's still taller than Optimus:
Despite it's lack of alt mode, I find this toy growing on me. Of all the TF's I've left on my workstation, I find Metroplex the one which I'm not afraid to fiddle around with. He's got solid ratchet joints which allow for plenty of play time and he's got that imposing size that catches attention.
If you've learned to appreciate Gundams, you'll learn to appreciate Metroplex. If you find him on sale or being sold as 2nd hand, then I would suggest you get him.
Here's me wishing that I can learn how to apply weathering on Metroplex!
