thanks guys! qb: nope. used the 50mm on this one. the 100mm macro's pretty heavy thats so hard to adjust if you're used on other prime/kit lens - it doesnt have IS so you'll need a decent tripod for it. i used it however on nath's zollidia and miketan's zakuF2/Ez8 however and those shoots took me around 4 hours minimum. gn: settings? usually it depends on the objective i want... a mix of this and that. i dont keep track of the settings nowadays but usually aperture is around 7 or 11 for figures (while for macro shots to bring out the details is around 20 to more to show the details) . shutter speed is around 1/30-1/100. ISO is set to 100 for maximum quality - if not, 400 is the limit. usually i use two light sources - adjustable 22watt lamps. will be adding a third one to eliminate shadowing on white backdrops though. for pure black backdrops i use felt paper since it "absorbs" light compared to cartolina. you can achieve lesser shadowing however - if you can soften the light sources - recently i wrapped up some white cloth on the lamps and this was the result: meanwhile for other subjects i used gift wrappers and such: as for this one, i used those fancy gift wrappersand placed it on a white cartolina for a "solid" color combo: and of course... the shameless plugs - you can check my reviews of them here: greattoysonline.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=toyreview&action=display&thread=7333greattoysonline.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=toyreview&action=display&thread=7332greattoysonline.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=toyreview&action=display&thread=7331

4 hours??? woah! the 100mm is that heavy? but would you recommend it for the purposes of toy shoots? Also, just wondering if you've ever tried to use an extension tube for your prime lens?

since you have a 50mm 1.8, you can try investing on extension tubes or closeup lens filters - like i posted earlier they're fair alternatives from getting a dedicated macro lens for toy photography purposes. i prefer closeup lens since you dont have to expose the sensor compared to tubes when changing them. took me 4 hours because it was my 1st time to fully use it - it doesnt have IS, its quite heavy - 600 grams alone and its quite "unorthodox" for me who's been used to the 50mm 1.8... you'll need good light and a stable tripod for it. seeing the setup i used on the upper posts i had to set the aperture to 20-23 for maximum detail on the kits so the shutterspeed had to be around 8 seconds. pretty annoying and irritating for a lazy person like me. i hated bob for playing devil's advocate on me that day. tsk. you can see more info here: www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-100mm-f-2.8-USM-Macro-Lens-Review.aspx

ah...i was actually looking at investing on the 60mm f2.8 USM this xmas. lighter by half than the 100mm and it produces almost as good macro shots. around 8k cheaper too. might go for the extension tube on the interim though. thanks for the insight.

yeah. if i cant find the decency and time to use it, i'll probably end up selling this lens and getting sigma or tamron's 70mm.
try the extension tubes or closeup lens first.
