Just read an article from 1up.com, seems like Sony's next gen consoles is due for a big splashdown this coming spring ( in Japan anyway). ETA around May (just like the PS2) Don't take my word on it though, the console's release may be pushed further til fall ( maybe Sony will attempt a simultaneous release?)
Anyway all this upping the ante as to which processor is more powerful and all that guff is enough to turn a gamer dizzy.
I remember back then when the dreamcast was released.................max polygon capacity more than a million plus 16mb of RAM. The poor thing was ahead of its time so when the PS2 juggernaut arrived................64 million polygons plus only 8 mb of dedicated Video RAM...........uggh...... not to mention all the jaggies (not to be confused with the juggies from "Its a Man Show"). Next we get the uber nerd Bill Gates throwing in his hat into this videogame rat race................Xbox.................132 million polys, anti aliasing Halo and DOA3 and DOAXV gaming goodness(boy, polygon boobies never looked this good! )
Now we have Xbox 360 (anyone own one yet?), the PS3 and Nintendo's Revolution. Each upping the ante against the other.
For the Xb360, a lot of horror stories concerning the heating problems and booting up the system (you need to download a patch? WTF). Still its got DOA4 (I hope this won't be a system exclusive this time ) because I'm planning to buy a system that will play Itagaki's wet dream game for nerds.
Now all this speculation with the PS3, its selling factor, besides the ramped up polys, is the Blue ray format which Sony seems to be pushing ( as in a gun to your head use it or else ) Anyway, thanks to no small part to the PS2, DVD infiltration in all households are near the saturation point.
Good news: Another gamers wet dream come true...........SquarEnix is planning a FF7 remake in the PS3 (1up is quoting Tetsuya Nomura, director/character designer of FF7,FF8,FFX,FFX-2 and Kingdom Hearts among others, that the PS3 tech demos showing the opening scene before the Raid in Midgar (FF7) running at real time is but a portent of things to come........WOW! . Now if that doesn't sell the system, I don't know what will. We have Soul Calibur 4 and the metal Gear series hot on the trail................so this will be a very expensive year end for the gaming public.
Bad news: Rumour? There were allegations which were quickly denied by Sony that their game software are one use/one unit exclusives. To put it simple: You buy a PS3 game( which has an encoded tag?), load it in your PS3 and voila............only that unit will recognize the disc, no other unit will. This unleashed a firestorm of protest from the used gaming community (what gives? Used games aren't pirated ones right? Albeit slightly depreciated in value)
Boy will this be a truely exciting year.................not to mention all the toys GT will be selling. ;D
