I just uncovered my big box of old PS1 games (over 50 items, some orig, mostly not) and am considering having my PSP Slim modded to play them (either that or i just sell all my gaming gear off). Can anyone advise me on what is the best custom firmware to load and where to have it loaded?
Thanks!

Go for the newest custom firmware which is 5.50 GEN-D3.

Check first if your PSP has a TA-088 v3 (or above) motherboard. If it has, then your unit is not permanently hackable. If you have a v2 or lower (mine is 085) then you may have it modded to your nearest game shop (do not try this yourself, your unit may brick).
As for the firmware, yes 5.50 Gen-D3 is the latest, it can also play 6.00 games. However you must install it step-by-step, meaning you must start first with Gen-A. Furthermore you can only install Gen-A if you have atleast 5.00 m33 firmware (note m33 firmwares are now discontinued, meaning there will no 6.00 m33 and up).
As for the games, you'll need Popstation to convert these games to it's EBOOT version, although I suggest downloading their respective EBOOTs rather than converting them.

Ditto, a lot can happen when converting your own games and frustration can be lingering all the time... try calling on your friend Google for further info. And before having your PSP modded; do check the risks and all info you will need, because the more you know the better to handle your situation.
