What obscure anime do you remember best? By "obscure" I mean an anime that most people wouldn't know, but you think is noteworthy. I like the movie Umi ga Kikoeru (I Can Hear the Sea), which few people know but it's by far is the most romantic anime I've ever come across. And to all Super Robot fans out there, an ABSOLUTE MUST WATCH is Hoshi no Koe (Voices of a Distant Star). It's just a thirty minute episode, made entirely by just one person, and it really really really tugs at the heartstrings (no it's not romance ). If you like Gundam SEED, you'll like Hoshi no Koe. One obscure anime that comes to mind is Serial Experiments Lain. The story shows how the boundaries between cyberspace & the real world gets blurred. It gave me a headache just trying to understand the story.
I've also seen Hoshi no Koe and it's alot close to being sci-fi rather than the super robot/mech genre. Yes, there are mech battles but it's not at the focal point of the story. But I deeply agree that it does pull at the heartstring quite strongly and it gives that warm-fuzzy feeling at the end.

i remember seein this toon movie as a kid... i think it was called Felidae or somethin like that. movie stars a bunch of cats investigating who or what has been brutally murdering their fellow cats. it's one of those first movies to expose me to cartoon violence. i can still remember the scene where they find a dead cat with it's intestines torn out and strewn all over the pavement

"Once upon a time"......................a Romeo and Juliet storyline but eventually revolved at the sins of the "great peace bringer". The price he paid to bring peace to his land at the expense of the life of his beloved. (It was aired in Channel 2 on New Years Eve long time ago. and localized by Harmony Gold)

I watch lots of obscure anime... Vampire Hunter D is one that doesn't seem to be too known. other titles would be Karas, Noein, King of Bandit Jing, Steam Boy, Metropolis, Detonator Orgun... and especially Jojo's Bizarre Adventure! ala Fist of the North Star style fights. one more title, not sure if anyone has heard of this, is Shin Angyou Onshi. an anime movie that's written by koreans.

I think it was also his fault that the war broke between the two kingdoms. All because he gave in to temptations. I also saw it in Channel 2 New Year's eve a long time ago. Late 80's? There was another....like....The World of the Talisman (?) Wow... Anyway, the japanese title I think is Windaria. I have it here somewhere in my pc. Peace

I was impressed with the fact it was all done by one guy (i.e., Makoto Shinkai) with no backing by any studio. In the original version, the voices were done by Makoto-sama and his then fiancee. The storyline is similar to Gunbuster: Aim for the Top. I know he came out with a full length movie The Place Promised in Our Early Days. I am trying to get a copy of that one. Also, try if you can watch his anime short She and Her Cat

Miyazaki's Anime titles Particularly Spirited Away To western audiences, Miyazaki's works may seem obscure but they are definitely classics. Try the lesser known works of Studio Ghibli, Whisper of the Heart, the Cat Returns, and Only Yesterday.
