Zeta Gundam: A new translation - Heirs to the Stars
MOVIE SUMMARY:
U.C. 0087 - Seven years has passed since the conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon in what was called the One Year War. The Titans - an elite military force created by the Earth Federation to hunt down Zeon remnants are now the tyrants throughout the colonies - spreading terror and corruption.
On the civilian colony of Green Noah, Quattro Bajina leads his team for reconissance and attempt to steal the Titan's latest mobile suit - the RX-178 Gundam Mk.II. The mission was a success due to intervention of Camille Bidan - a young teenager who hates the Titans. It came with a fatal cost however, as both of Camille's parents were killed in the process. Upon learning of the Titan's true nature, Titans pilot Emma Sheen defects to the AEUG.
With the Argama moving in to Earth orbit (AEUG will launch an attack on Titans Headquarters in Jaburo), Camille sees Reccoa Londo off on an mission to infiltrate the base. During preparations the Argama recovers a shuttle under attack carrying Bright Noah (captain of the legendary White Base) and Camille's friend Fa Yuri. Both join up the Argama to fight against the Titans.
Meanwhile on Earth, Amuro Ray is visited by old friends - Fraw Kobayashi, Kikka, Katz and Letz (the white base's crew). The visit is an unpleasant one as Amuro is criticized for not joining the AEUG. At this point Amuro explains that he is under surveilance because of the Earth Federation's suspicion that he (being a newtype) is dangerous.
As the operation begins, the Titans moves in as well to intercept them. Camille (now assigned as the Mk.II's pilot) finishes off most of them singlehandedly - even against ace veteran piot Lila Milla Rira. Jerrid Messa, a Titans pilot who was also responsible for the death of Camille's mother, swears revenge against Camille for killing Lila and his friend Kakricon.
After successfully infiltrating Jaburo airspace, the AEUG manage to overpower the base's defense forces (made up of Gouf Flight types, Act-Zakus and such) with ease. Jerrid manages to find Camille and confront him over what happend to Lila but loses him inside Jaburo. Camille senses Reccoa trying to call out and tries to find her. Meanwhile Apolly learns the truth about the ease of the infiltration - a nuclear bomb is buried underneath Jaburo and is set to explode in less than an hour.
Camille and Jerrid engage each other again - with Jerrid's Marasai losing an arm. In the heat of the battle their beam rifle shots meet each other and set off an explosive reaction - resulting to the Mk.II is being thrown away and Jerrid evacuating the Marasai just before it explodes.
Camille then finally finds Recooa and Kai Shinden (former Guncannon pilot now turned journalist/spy) with Char arriving to inform them of the real threat - they all then evacuate the base. Meanwhile Jerrid luckily manages to escape in a crowded shuttle with the help of a Mouar Pharoah. As the Mk.II and Hyaku Shiki manages to rejoin the AEUG group in the Audhumla transport plane several HiZacks desparately open fire on them - they finally manage to board the plane just in time as the nuclear bomb explodes and destroys everything in Jaburo.
Somewhere in an airport Amuro and Katz manage to escape his escorts and successfully hijacks a cargo plane. Back at the Audhumla, Hayato Kobayashi joins and informs Char about the threat the Oakland Newtype labs (taken over by the Titans) posed.
At this point, Camille finally learns of Quattro's true identity after hearing a conversation between Kai and Hayato. Moments later the Gaplant, piloted by artificial newtype Rosamia Badam leads a squadron of Act-Zakus to attack the Audhumla while
Titans pilot Buran Blutarch launches in his Asshimar somewhere else to join in the fray. With the attacks intensifying, Camille heads out and engages on the Gaplant and successfully "piggyback rides" it - however Rosamia transforms the Gaplant into MS mode and has the Camille thrown off. With Rosamia taking the advantage of the situation she fires off several shots at Camille only to have Quattro sneak in and attack her.
Buran then arrives and calls Rosamia off to regroup. After a quick resupply Camille and Quattro tries to fend off Buran with pellet shot ammo but fails due to the Asshimar's superior maneuverability (although the Asshimar loses its monoeye sensor, its replacedby three mini-monoeyes!!!). Quattro is distracted when he notices the an approaching cargo plane (piloted by Amuro and Katz) and gets punched by the Buran and loses control. Katz then evacuates the cargo plane via a homoavis glider and just before the Asshimar reaches the Audhumla (in an attempt to disable the cockpit to retrieve the plane intact) Amuro smashes the cargo plane unto it - breaking the cockpit off. Buran then decides to retreat and Amuro jumps out from the cockpit and opens his parachute. Camille then moves in to rescue Amuro as Quattro moves in and opens his cockpit hatch. At this point Quattro and Amuro stare at one another and Camille remembers of them being rivals in the One Year War. The move finally comes to a close with Amuro shouting "Char!" over the horizon.
some plot/story differences from tv to movie:
- the movie begins with char's infiltration on green noah and not with camille's introduction.
- kamille's introductory incident with jerrid in the tv's 1st ep wasnt shown in the beginning - he was introduced as he was interrogated for it.
- instead of having the ahgama fire off its mega particle cannon to punch a hole at green noah, char and his rick dias team infiltate it directly instead.
- camille's imprisonment at the alexandria was ommited. (ep.3)
- bask ohm's plan of acquiring titans as a mission for emma sheen is ommited. instead franklin bidan poses as an engineer during negotiations on the return of the stolen gundam mk.II units and hijacks a rick dias instead)
- the ahgama never went to the 30 bunch colony (a standpoint where emma finally decides to defect to the AEUG), but instead shows her a video of it which leads to the same result.
- since the ahgama never went to the 30 bunch, lila wasnt killed there - instead she was killed by kamille during the drop mission to jaburo.
- reccoa's shuttle launch was safe.
- the moon epsiodes (where char meets wong lee - AEUG's financier) was ommited (ep. 8 ).
- the flying armor was finished without camille's assistance unlike in the tv series.
- stopover at kennedy spaceport (where roberto was killed and apolli escapes to space) was ommited (ep.13)
- the scene of camille's confrontation on quattro's true identity is omitted (ep.13).
- although both hyaku shiki and mk.II sucessfully damage the asshimar's monoeye sensor with pellet shots, the asshimar still functions with three smaller monoeyes! wow!
CONCLUSION:
After 20 years, the Zeta series finally get its own movie compilation trilogy starting off with this first one. Fans of the tv series and this one wouldnt be hard to relate with each other since the script changes from tv to movie worked out well - as the plot and character developments ended up the same.
as for the music, most of the bgm is based from the tv series which i find fairly decent considering it gives old fans that "old zeta feel". i really like the music especially the asshimar vs. hyaku shiki + mk.II duel.
the new animation mixed in especially the ms battles is very fluid. (especially with the scenes with gaplant and asshimar were involved - heck those two units could really fly and give the VF-0's a tough time!)
the only issue i find here is that bandai could've at least ditched the old animation and started the whole animation fresh from scratch - obviously its really noticable which part is old and which is new. from one point you would admire the new animation in one scene, but then you're suddenly shown with the old in the next and so forth. considering the cash flow bandai gets and the popularity of the zeta series, its simply possible so why not?! the thought of cost-cutting is already obvious, as to how typical bandai is with their various products, but im pretty much sure that fans old and new would appreciate it.
overall, its a pretty good movie for zeta fans and aspiring non-zeta fans!
