Before I proceed with reviewing the Play Arts Arms (aka: Ultimate / Celestial Weapons) of FFVIII and FFX characters; I'll give an overview of the basic weapons provided to the respective characters by default.
When you buy your Final Fantasy VIII (except Rinoa) and Final Fantasy X Play Arts action figure; you get a highly-articulated and intricately-detailed action figure; a spare pair of hands and a default weapon. The weapon that comes with your Play Arts figure is NOT the weakest weapon that they have in the game, but the first one that they obtain or their trademark weapon.
Here are the measurements of the "Default" Weapons:
Gathered Pic
Tidus' Brotherhood = 21.5 cm (up to the end of the tassle)
Yuna's Staff = 15.5 cm (up to the end of the tassle)
Auron's Katana = 20.5 cm
Selphie's Flail = 31 cm (fully-stretched)
Squall's Revolver = 20 cm (up to the end of the "Griever" keychain)
Now for the Play Arts Arms;
In order to enhance your display, giving your Play Arts action figure their Ultimate weapon is a great choice, though entirely optional. These Play Arts Arms set are Square-Enix online shop exclusives but Greattoys.net is very generous to provide some stocks for us.
Gathered Pic
Masamume: Auron's Celestial Weapon which is not to be confused with Sephiroth's impaling tool of doom. It gave me the impression of a Black "Beetle" Blade because of its interesting shape.
- Colors are black, gold and red; the blackness which I suppose would compliment Auron's inner clothing since his kimono is very red.
- The Masamume is 26.5 cm long up to the end of the tassle.
- The tassle must be removed so that you can place the Masamune on the hole of Auron's left hand.
- Personal Rating: 5/5
Lionheart: Squall's Ultimate Weapon; whose name I think, is a pun of his family name "Leonhart." The Lionheart surprised me with its size as the Revolver is quite small compared to it.
- The Lion embedded on the gun part of this gun-blade is not really intricately-detailed but could suffice for the weapon.
- Colored silver (gray?) and black; it compliments Squall's clothing scheme, especially the fur jacket.
- The Lionheart is 20.5 cm long.
- Personal Rating: 4.5/5
Caladbolg: Tidus' Celestial Weapon. Unlike the Brotherhood whose blade is molded in translucent PVC which gives the watery effect, this one is rather opaque.
- Its colors are blue, white, gold with small hints of green.
- The Caladbolg measures 16.5 cm long.
- Personal Rating: 4/5
Nirvana: Yuna's Celestial Weapon. The most colorful of all the Play Arts Arms and the staff itself compliment the colors of Yuna's Obi.
- The tip (bird-shaped?) of the staff is colored in pink-yellow gradient (but a bit dusty in my opinion) with hints of green, while its handle is a gradient of black to navy blue and comes with a white and red tassle.
- The very edge of the wand has another tassle, colored orange and white, which should be removed (but I think you don't have to) so that you can place the wand on Yuna's hand.
- The Nirvana measures 15 cm long up to the end of its tassle.
- Personal Rating: 4.5/5
Strange Vision: Selphie's Ultimate Weapon
- dial-shaped red nunchaku with hints of gold and green-metal tips resembling that of a devil's trident.
- The chains aren't simple anymore and could easily get entangled, rough usage could make them break. Be extra careful!
- The Strange Vision measure 36 cm if fully-stretched.
- Personal Rating: 4/5
What is the best thing to do with the old weapons?
Its up to you, but do not throw them away or sell them because if you do, you will regret it later. Keep them or use them for other action figures without weapons.
As for me, I gave Yuna's old wand to Rinoa. Its blue handle complimented Rinoa's clothes.
Thank you for reading this short review. ;D
