Hey guys I'm planning on getting the Shin Getter anime but some sources said that there are more than one versions of Shin Getter, what's the best among these versions? Are they different from one another? And another question, do I need to watch the first two Getter series to understand Shin?

Hey, Zidac. Your question is bit of a big one. Let me see if I can help you out. Now, there are several Shin Getter anime series around, including:
1. Shin Getter vs. Neo Getter: This is a four-part OAV which features a world where the world has banned the use of getter energy after a devastating battle that destroyed New York City (?). Instead a safer, new Getter Robo (Neo Getter Robo) is introduced. But the return of an old enemy serves as the impetus for the resurrection of a stronger but long lost Getter robo (Shin Getter Robo)
2 Change!! Shin Getter Robo - Sekai Saishuu no Hi - Otherwise known in the U.S. as Shin Getter: Armageddon, this is a 13-part OAV which features the whole world devastated by Getter energy and humanity only salvation lies in a robo powered by the very same energy, Shin Getter Robo. This OAV has no relation to Shin Getter vs. Neo Getter and there are some significant changes in the characters from the original TV series.
3. Shin Getter Robo Another 13-part OAV released in 2004, that has absolutlely no connection to the previous OAV and the original TV series. This is a complete retelling of the original series with the Getter Team being a rehased (but more twisted) version of the original team.
I guess the question is what kind of Shin Getter are you looking for? Personally, I liked the first two better. I preferred the design of that Shin Getter rather than the 2004 Version.
I hope this helps.

Ah ok, that explains much. The Shin Getter series I'm looking for is the one they keep on using for the Super Robot Wars Alpha games, not really sure if you've played it though, but is it Armageddon?

IIRC, the Shin Getter Robo in that game is this one: www.hlj.com/product/SHE016If so, that would be the same as the Shin Getter vs. Neo Getter and Shin Getter: Armageddon.

Armageddon is an okay OAV. Although if you are familiar with the original series, you will be disappointed with the way the characters have been twisted into darkey, grittier people. Action-wise... wow!
