Mahou Shojo Ai
format: previously a R-18 PC game by COLORS, recently localized by Japan Anime into english (DVD region #1). Supposedly 5 volume series with the 5th still pending release.
Genre: Bishoujo,supernatural (demons and tentacles)
Bonus: Unlike the previous efforts done by Anime18, Critical Mass and NuTECH which all but "massacred" the beautiful covers of their releases, Japan Anime used double sided covers, one full exposure while the default was that around PG-16 levels.
Synopsis:
Virtually all anime of this genre share a common thread, cute bespectacled girls wearing school uniforms being pursued by slobbering perverts who love to score upskirt style but is actually a magical warrior out to save the world from the onslaught of invading demonic tentacle fiends.................
So just like Demon Hunter Yokko, we have indeed a school girl who hunts down demons, but this girl Ai, unlike the stereotype is a loner, bad@ss who gets into beserk mode if push comes to shove. The other anime that shares some similarities are Twin Dolls/Twin Angel series, La Blue Girl, Demon Beast series, Inma Seiden and Urotsokidoji.
The anime is indeed perverted and ultra-violent gory. There are a lot of eviscerations, decapitations and gross forced #$@$*! But it still retains a somewhat cuteness foctor for its "mahou shojo" stereotype with a tinge of comedy.
The animation values are top-notch by the way, with sharp super clear graphics and a moving J-pop techo soundtrack.
The story ( a little spoiler)In the town where Akitoshi lives, there are a lot of assaults and murder ( of the sexual nature) perpetrated but still unsolved.
It starts with the hero Akitoshi, who in a dream sequence watches his childhood friend and a classmate at the hands of a tentacled demon( the rest is up to your imagination what the demon is doing OK? ;D) then enters Ai Kagano who initially gets the upper hand by turning the demon into little sushi slabs, but the jerk distracts her long enough for her to also get captured by the demon( you guys know the rest what eventually happens .
It seems that Akitoshi has somewhat of a mindlink with Ai, who he discovers is a classmate of his and it seems that he too has a crush on her.
The demons are later identified as the "Yuragi", feeding off humans dark emotions (sexual desires, hatred, envy etc.) The infestation of the Yuragi is also widespread in the college where they attend (college? sure............... ) but they only made their presence felt as possessed humans with a lot of tentacles......
By the 4th volume, the heroine, Ai is in the clutches of one of the Yuragi ( an unexpected one at that) who proceeds on torturing her..............she gets into beserk mode and beats the creature but to the point that she nearly kills Akitoshi in the process.
Akitoshi's presence though calms her beserk mode and she returns to normal. The story eventually leads to the "mastermind" Yuragi" in the college but......................
still waiting for volume #5
For a new take on this genre, I'd give it a highly recommended look, but................. bummer to the fact that the company that localized it has temporarily shelved the 5th release.
