I don't think it was based on the comics. The reason Spidey and half of the Marvel super heroes are revealing their identities is due to the Super Hero Registration act made by the US congress. If a masked super hero doesn't register, he is considered a criminal.
Also the reason for the Civil War story is because Marvel wants to bring back Thor, Hawkeye and other super heroes who had died before the House of M. This is a rumor though...

of you consider the earth x- paradise x story lines, peter parker works as a cop and is recognized widely as spider-man along with a number of heroes with identities revealed. in the marvel2 universe, spidey's daughter took over after pete lost a leg. marvel merging these continuities?

For some reason, only Spider-Girl is the only from M2 that is still on going. But I think that's a different timeline since the original Spidey's identity is still unknown to the public. SGP

IMO, the writers have probably run-out of story material to tell... ^^;;; How many years has Spiderman been in the comic book industry? That's how many issues per year, covering a number of Spiderman titles and side-stories...

we all know that this is just part of marketing strategy or gimiks to bring back focus on the character. make sales chart boost up again. shake up the entire Marvel Universe as it is. or to divert our attention from their rival's movie -- DC's Superman Returns. well, this kind of story/revelation/event brings a lot of attention... to readers, talk shows, medias, and of course, to comic book collectors... or sometimes... that kind of story is just a good read. an entertaining one.
i really don't like comebacks, character resurrections and such... but when i read Batman: Under The Hood... i got interested with Jason Todd again. i don't hate him when he became the 2nd Robin. but it doesn't mean i will collect every Jason Todd's reappearance issues after that... all i'm trying to say is... i got entertained... and i like the story.
with Peter Parker's revelations... i guess all the good stories are told in the last 4 decades. time and time again. but in this case, it focus on a 'real-case' scenario... the 'what if's' scenario... based on "real life". what if the government put out a constitution act like this one? a hero/mutant registration act? what would you do? in real life... "what would you 'really' do?" are you going to reveal yourself? hide like a fugitive? or you just stop using your superhero powers?
i think it raises too many questions and curiosities. and sometimes this kind of stories... can get you really, really hooked. i just hope the editors, writers and artists will do justice for telling this kind of stories/events. btw, look what they did to Identity Crisis.
right now... i'm just going to wait for the Civil War paperback to read the whole story. my 2 centavos.

@no3ljm That is a very good insight on why the writers decided to push through with the identity revelation plot...And I agree, substance is what counts, an "event" is only an event, but a "story" needs substance for the readers to sink their thoughts into...

Ca- ching to your pocket. Marvel must really be scrapping the bottom of the barrel.
Has everyone garnered writers block? Is there something in the air that deprives the present generation of writers originality?

iwon't be surprised if this leads to a relaunch of marvel continuity. happens lots o times taking into account the silly heroes reborn, heroes return, ultimate marvel thingies.... just a few months ago we thought spidey died too...

I hope the guys who are claiming that Marvel is 'running out of ideas' are still reading comics today. Otherwise, your opinion is not really significant. I don't mean to offend anyone, but I think you only have the license to claim a comic sucks or is very good if you have actually taken a look at it. If you think a comic sucks even against popular opinion, that's fine as long as you've read it. It's your opinion anyway. It's just that prejudging a book does not have any credible reason.
Remember that all these crazy Marvel events has been done since the 60's. The Avengers' line-up was completely changed in the 60's, and the X-Men was revamped in the late 70's with Giant Size X-Men. Gwen Stacy's death is also a shocker. The only reason why they decided to let MJ and Spidey marry was because of Stan Lee's decision to do it in the comic strips.
My only hope is that any repurcussions by this event should have significant effects after it is over and not just returning the Marvel Universe to its status quo. Personally, I'm only reading the Ultimate Universe comics (which is very good, although U X-Men and U Spidey have lowered in quality since before), I can't make a judgment for how good Civil War is, just hope you non-readers do the same.
