im sure your gonna enjoy it. just like what adelaine said, its sorta like a history book, but there also lots of short stories there that you'll find enjoyable, there's a story about triumph, tragedy, love and romance, and many many more. enjoy ;D

Recommendation: "Smith of Wooton Major and Farmer Giles of Ham." Skip directly to Farmer Giles' story ;D about a farmer with a gun who doesn't know it's a gun and a dragon that's eating his sheep.... It's short and entertaining and is a good introduction to Tolkien.
reg. Silmarillion, and about the movies in general; it's sad that in the movie, they weren't able to portray Galadriel like Tolkien originally meant her to be. Although it's not obvious, she's actually the most powerful woman in middle earth, far far older than Elrond, and is said to be a match of Feanor, the guy who made the silmarillions (as UJ said, the silmarillions are jewels of great "magic", the One Ring is nothing compared to them) and the elf-letters that they use.
By "smuigel", if you meant SMEAGOL, that's Gollum's real name. ;D

a match for Feanor? hmm i never knew about that. "them" as adelaine said so, is that there are 3 silmarils and not just one. Adelaine: isn't the third silmaril with galadriel's hubby? one was on the bottom of the ocean and the other cut off feanor's hand and into the volcano.

@uj: it wasn't cut off Feanor's hand (Feanor died soon after the silmarils were stolen); but yes one of them fell into a volcano. The third one isn't with galad's hubby, it's with Earendil, Elrond's father, who travels across the night sky on his flying ship (you know the flask that Galadriel gave to Frodo? The one that's a reflection of the evening star on her mirror? That's the third silmaril).
