m basing this on the movie and not the book so bare with me. ive three reasons, first he was destined to do it, that is why gandalf let him pick it up. second since he has already touched the ring when he picked it up the corruption already started and it would be wise to let him continue being the ring bearer other than have someone else be corrupted. and third, he its either he is the only one with enough constitution to bear the ring's corruption or he was the only one "pure" enough to handle the ring's corruption.

hobbits or halflings are not easily corrupted by the ring... as you can see the old guy (hobbit) who owned the ring first used it for magic, not for evil purposes... and yes patacat is right...

That's pretty much how it was explained in the book too. ;D
Just a side note: Hobbits for some reason or another seem quite immune to the Ring's corruption. And Gollum, who possessed the Ring far longer than Frodo or Bilbo ever did, should've turned into a wraith already but didn't. Any living thing that comes in contact with the Ring becomes linked to it in some way. In the book, Gandalf kept saying that "[Gollum] would have a part to play in the end," and surely enough, if it wasn't for Gollum the Ring would never have been destroyed.

i think Gandalf knew Frodo very well based sa movie ha... not sure bout the book. remember the fellowship of the ring scene when frodo was waiting for gandalf? Frodo: "you're late!" Gandalf: "a wizard is nevr late. he arrives precisely when he needs to..." then they started laughing. based on how they interact on that scene, i think they knew each other very well. Then dun naman sa mines... sa me bridge where Gandalf fell. ayaw ngang umalis ni frodo dun d b? kinarga lang cia. he loved gandalf so much that he didnt want to leave him behind. This is another evidence that they knew each other for a long time. hope this helps. peace

Actually, it was Gandalf who sent Bilbo (Frodo's uncle) on a quest seventy years before the start of LoTR. It was on that quest where Bilbo got the Ring. They've kept in touch over the years, so yes, Gandalf knew Frodo very well.

guys if you like THE LORD OF THE RINGS, you should try reading THE SILMARILLION, its also a book by JRR Tolkien. before LOTR there was THE HOBBIT (this the adventure of bilbo baggins where he got the ring and met gollum for the first time), but before THE HOBBIT, is THE SILMARILLION. this book tells the GREAT beginning of middle-earth. in this book you'll know why dwarves and elves are bitter rivals, why there are "black" haired elves (e.g. Lord Elrond) and "white" haired elves (e.g. Prince Legolas) (its not just a fashion statement, there's a story to it too), a glimpse of who gandalf is (he isn't just a mere "human"), and who actually is sauron, is he human? elf? dwarf? (i bet you never thought of that huh? hehehe) and lots more stories of the elves ancestors and gods/spirits/angels.

UberJ, fellow tolkien-reader din pala po kayo (I'm so happy...) Just a note, the Silmarillion is written like a history book so it might not appeal to some people's taste. But there's an appendix at the end of Return of the King that summarizes the important parts of the first three ages (LotR is set in the third age). The Silmarillion doesn't tell a lot about the history of humans, tho.
