10. Bobby Zilch // Psychonauts
Big? Check. Nappy? Check. Covered in boogers? Probably. Bobby Zilch of Psychonauts is what we imagine would happen if Napoleon Dynamite and Richard Simmons had a baby. He's uncomfortably homely in the face, but his enormous hair makes matters exponentially worse. It's really no wonder that he's a bully.
9. Dr. Wily // Mega Man
We don't hold anything against most victims of male-pattern baldness. Dr. Wily is an exception. But it's not for his shiny dome that Wily makes the list. Rather, the spiky bits that protrude from the sides of his head have us concerned. Going bald isn't a choice for most men, but looking like a massive walking moustache is.
8. Raziel // Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Raziel's hair makes the list for being the ickiest display of cosmetology ever. We imagine taking a tar-soaked mop and throwing it onto a rotting corpse would result in something identical to the Soul Reaver anti-hero. (If only we had the resources to verify this sort of thing.) The surprisingly organic, full-bodied hair contrasts starkly with his withered, decayed flesh, and quite frankly makes us just a little bit queasy.
7. Blue Suede Goo // Clay Fighter
Oh, baby! Imagine an Elvis impersonator who's made entirely out of clay...and works in a circus...where the performers have been mutated by a mysterious meteor strike. That's Blue Suede Goo, honey, and he's got some of the worst hair we've ever, ever seen. Worse still, Goo's hair can be used as a weapon, making it as damaging to your face as it is to your sense of aesthetics.
6. Knuckles // Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic the Hedgehog paved the road for bad-haired videogame stars, but in Sonic & Knuckles his rival shows up to out-do his bad do. Knuckles is neither female nor Jamaican, yet he rocks sultry dreadlocks without a moment's hesitation. We think that's wrong, and so we welcome Knuckles to the list.
5. Zangief // Street Fighter II
Bad haircuts can happen in more places than just the top of the head. Zangief proves this with excellently sculpted body hair that forms an arrow pointing to his nether regions. The subtle mohawk he rocks on his otherwise bald skull is equally wretched, cementing Zangief's place on our list of bad haircuts.
4. Zack // Dead or Alive 2
Few haircuts reek of teenage angst worse than those of Zack from Dead or Alive. Zack's outstanding lack of taste comes to a head in Dead or Alive 2, where he begins a tradition of showcasing awful, awful haircuts. In just one game, Zack finds a way to fit in three offensive hairdos, a feat unsurpassed by any other game character.
3. Link // Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Many mistakenly attribute the backlash against The Wind Waker to the game's controversial artistic styling. The real reason behind the anti-Link sentiment is the amorphous mass of hair that pours out from under the hero's cap. Link's usually sharp, well-groomed do is replaced with a puffy mess of yellow that makes him hatable in a Haley Joel Osment sort of way.
2. Cloud Strife // Final Fantasy VII
In the Final Fantasy universe, there are many horrendous haircuts from which to pick. We could've mocked Squall's hair that perfectly matches his name, or called attention to Tidus's uncanny resemblance to Meg Ryan. But without question, the worst hair spawned from the mind of Final Fantasy artist Tetsuya Nomura is that of Cloud Strife, hero (and heroine) of Final Fantasy VII.
1. Solid Snake // Metal Gear Solid 2
It wasn't until his PlayStation 2 debut that Solid Snake adopted the worst haircut in videogame history. Combining elements of "ultimate" and "mullet," Snake adorns the Ultimullet, an amazingly bold attempt to match the rowdy hairstyle of a 1980s Kurt Russel. What other videogame haircut exudes so much raw, masculine power? We argue none.
