I thought I'd share this little tidbit from www.toyboxdx.comHere's the explanation why Gundam killed the Super Robot genre, including the company that created it. Note: Gundam was created/designed by Clover, not Popy/Bandai, Bandai only got the exclusive license to produce the model kits.. which were an instant hit that caused riots in a Tokyo Department store in 1983.. (true story..). www.toyboxdx.com/data/clover/cloverdiecast.htm ;D Gold

I remembered that I really like Grendizer, Mazinger Z and the best on my list was Voltron (Lion), Daimos and Voltes V on my early 90's. Since I was born early 80's, all I know that time was macross and transformers. But after seeing the designs of the modern Gundams (Wing,X) I got hooked up w/ Gundams. I never liked the RX-78 Gundam before, but after a while, I appreciated the original Gundams (UC era). And that is why i started collecting Gundam toys and kits. For me, my first choice are Gundams than Super Robots. Im into the Real Robots line. Till now, Gundam is one of the longest running mecha anime of all time, it is because MSG are very popular ranging from animations to toys and model kits. And they are really popular for the young and the old people (everybody knows a Gundam). As for Super Robots, they are still very popular and a must have on mecha collection. They never disappeared even it started on 70's. They still live on no matter what. Also, some new super robots are becoming popular together w/ the old ones. This is my own opinion and just being me.
