Thanks to various sites....Prime Saber`s, bwtf and seibertron, I managed to piece together the back story to Star Convoy. Note, I am adding my own conjectures due to the fact that the original japanese writers never took into consideration story continuity that at times the story did not make sense.
Starting in Transformers Zone, Star Saber, the hero of the Victory series nearly bit the bullet rescuing the population of a planet destroyed by # 8 Destron generals ( Abominus,Menasor,Devastator,Predaking,Overlord,Trypticon,King Poseidon and Dark Zarak) who were after the Zodiac enrgon source.
In the toy, Metrotitan was supposedly their Supreme commander(evil Metroplex) but in the OVA, it was a nebulous three headed insect like being called Violenjiger.( Diaclone fans take note of your old catalogs...same insect like beings were the nemesis of the Diaclone force)
Conjecture:Violenjiger may be just an "avatar" for the being eventually called Dark Nova (a spawn of Unicron?)
Anyway, led by Dai Atlas, who took over the mantle of leadership from Star Saber, beat the 5 generals and colected the Zodiac enrgon.
Battle stars/Returrn of Convoy:
In Headmasters, Galvatron was eventually beaten and buried under an avalanche somewhere in the North (there were eskimos so I`m assumming its in the Arctic region).There he laid under "stasis lock" until reawakened and re-formated into Super Megatron. Purpose? To recover the Zodiac enrgon? Kill the Cybertrons?
Anyway, Super Megatron, a b.utt kicking reformat of the original Megatron looked like a muscled flying super cannon. Imagine G1 Megatron on steroids ( a pity Takara never created a toy for him ).
So, Super Megs, under the command of Dark Nova (or is it control?Shades of Transformer the Movie) reigned terror and chaos in the galaxy, thus Skygarry, current commander of the Battle Stars, appropriated the Zodiac enrgon to revive Super Megatron`s ancient sparring partner/nemesis..............Convoy!
Once revived, Super Megatron was eventually defeated but was reformatted into Ultra Megatron. As usual, Megatron gets his @ss kicked and gets another upgrade in the form of his merging with Dark Nova into Star Giant. Here I assume, Star Convoy, Grandus and Skygarry eventually defeats him.
In Zone and Battle Stars, I believe there was 1 OVA each and the story continued in a manga form
