Just finished the series a few days ago and it was a good watch despite the crappy HK subs. To compare the Series to DYRL is like comparing a car to a plane. Its two different things although similar in certain aspects.
They follow the same storyline concept revolving Protoculture, the origin of Zentradu, etc although how the events happened in the series was changed in the movie.
Some of the obvious differences in the movie and series areare:
Macross DYRL:
- Famous popstar Minmay is recued by Hikaru after a Zentradi attack on the Macross inside the ship. Hikarus VF-1A crashes and the two are starnded inside an isolated part of the ship.
- The two escape after macross starts to transform
- Hikrau and Minmay are captured by Brittai after going on a pleasure cruise on VT-1 Ostrich. Also captured are Misa hayase, Lyn Kai Fu and Roy Fokker who goes after the couple.
-Roy Fokker is killed by a Zentradi soldier after trying to help Misa and Hikaru escape Brittais Ship. Minmay and Kai Fu remain on the ship as it folds. Misa and Hikaru escape
-Misa and Hikaru discover ancient ruins after crash landing on earth following their escape from Brittais ship which reveal the story behind the ancient civilization and Zentradi race.
- Max becomes leader of Skull Squadron following Hikarus "disappearance". They arrive on Earth and rescue the stranded couple who apparently fell in love with each other.
- Kakizaki is killed by attacking Meltrandi warriors on Earth
- Max (piloting a blue VF-1S) battles Milia on earth and defeats her on a Meltran ship. He "disapears' with the Meltran ship after the Zentradi fleet led by Brittai arrive on earth along with Minmay .
- Brittais fleet offers a truce. They revolt against Badolza using the lyrics found by Misa in the ancient ruins and the music held in possesion by the Zentradi.
-Hikaru kills Badolza in his souped up red VF-1S Strike Valk. Movie ends.
Follow-up movie:
Flashback 2010
Takes place after DYRL, Misa takes command of the first expedition ship to be launched from earth called Megaroad 1. Along with her is Hikaru with skull squadron in spiffy VF-4 lightnings and Minmay. (Max remains on earth but leaves on a separate colonization trip with Milia which leads to the story of Macross 7)
What Happened in the Series:
- Unknown restaurant worker Minmay is recued by Hikaru in a VF-1D trainer. They are taken by Roy Fokker to Macross but the two decide to escape in Hikrus commercial flyer. the two get caught in the Macross intiial fold. they end up in space then crash lands for safety in Macross. they then get stuck in an isolated part of Macross.
- The two are rescued after workers start rebuilding the city inside Macross.
- Hikaru, Misa and Kakizaki are captured by Brittai on a recon job and is rescued by Max.
- Misa goes to earth to convince her father to hold of the attack against Badolza.Badolza attacks Earth destroying everything in site. Only Misa survives. the Macross who was already in truce with Brittais fleet attack Badolza killing him in the process. hikaru crsah lands on earth follwoing the attack and rescues Misa. macross eventually alnds on earth and the two joins them.
- Also at this point Max and Milia are already married. They met in person when Milia entered Macross as a spy.
-Roy Fokker gets killed in a Meltrandi attack on earth. He dies in the macross due to wounds sustained in the fight.
- Hikaru leads Skull squadron. kakizaki dies after Macross barrier goes haywire.
- Series ends with Kamjin waging a final war against the Macross. Macross is able to use one last attack with its cannon to stop Kamjin but is partially destroyed in the process after kamjins ship suicde dives into it.

Max and Milia get to ahve their own squad in the series. Following kakizakis death max is given his own team while Hikaru is given new subordinated for Skull Squadron.
Hikarus first job leading a squad was with Vermillion squadron with Max and Kakizaki then as his subordinated. After Roy dies, Hikaru is promoted to Skull 1 with Max and Kakizaki presumably being promoted into the squdron.
