Quote: "Vigilance is the foundation from which Victories are built"
Nearing the 20th Anniversary of Transformers: The Movie, I managed to acquire a 2nd hand, circa 1985, Hasbro Japan Metroplex aka Autobot City courtesy of Greattoys.
This version has plastic tires unlike the Takara's version, but to my surprise, despite the nearly two decades since its conceptualization, this version still can hold its weight against the latest Cybertron version.
When compared to his rival Trypticon (Dinozer), both in height and width, he is somewhat smaller (given in the anime, Dinozer was constructed much later than Metroplex).
By scale though, he isn't accurate in a sense that for him to reach at least the "City Mode", he'd have to be at least as tall as Fortress Maximus ( who stands 2ft. tall) so I guess when compared to Fortress in real-time he'd be a tad shorter (around the shoulders).
Metroplex the figure is as tall as the G1 Ultra Magnus, built like a wrestler and holds a fairly simple transformation when compared to his latest version in Cybertron. Thank heaven for the absence of the "gold-plastic syndrome".
Accessories to this bruiser are butt kickin' for he comes with the following:
1. Six-gun, sort off like Convoy's Combat deck, only mobile and sentient. Two black arms/guns, two red missle launching guns for legs, two smaller cannons for his torso and head and the Omni directional antenna/chest plate.
2. Slammer, a white tank that transforms into a tower.
3. Scamper, a souped up version of spy bots like Roller only black and transforms into a jet black six-wheeled sportscar armed with two guns on the roof.
4. (1) collapsing shoulder monted anti-matter projector and a removable version on the left shoulder.
5. Tower(?) building that mounts on his right shoulder blade.
He transforms into three modes:
1. Robot: with a hidden artillery guns on his left shoulder
2. Battle station: a cross between Macross and "King Diamond" stadium (Mekanda fans 'nuff said) 'cause of the wheels. I am not sure though if Metroplex ever took flight (only in the Japanese catalog battle scenes) in the anime.
3. Autobot City: composed of the chest "draw bridge" and a bunch of repair bays that make up his legs ( again in homage to Convoy's repair bay cum trailer/Autobot Headquarters)
I could get on and on but by far, I like him a lot, sure the Cybertron version has more points of articulation, taller and has a kick @ss hammer/weapon, but there is something about the G1 blockiness thats really magic, and the existence of Reprolabels more than makes up for the faded high lights.
More pics to come.
