This is actually a double-review of WST Grimlock/Commander & Slag/Flamethrower by JustiToys.
Dinobots...who can forget about 'em every TF fans knew 'em and they are definitely one of the most popular characters/toys in the G1 series Transformers.
I've always wanted to complete all sets but the price for those lovable Dinobots are way out of my league so I give WST Dinobots a chance and I was not disappointed at all.
WST Grimlock/Commander
This WST is not really an official release by neither Hasbro nor Tomy/Takara so Grimlock was renamed to Commander and likewise Slag into Flamethrower.
Dinobot mode:
Commander/Grimlock is a T-Rex and is a faithful recreation of the G1 Dinobot Grimlock, well almost but its close. I don't own any original Dinobot figure so I could not compare the two in details but as far as I know, based on pictures from the Internet, the only difference are the color of the eyes. The G1 Grimlock had red colored eyes in dinobot mode while this WST Grimlock/Commander has light blue eyes. Its really no big deal if you ask me because the light blue suits WST Grimlock/Commander just fine. The figure itself is well built considering its size and it does have some die-cast parts and chrome which makes the figure stand out. Articulation on both puny hands (rotate 360), legs and claws and the mouth.
Score: 5/5
Robot Mode:
Transformation is similar to G1 Grimlock. Separate the tail end and rotate the back part to become its feet. Push back its dinobot arms to reveal robot arms and hands. Split the chest area to reveal the robot head and slide over the dinobot belly to become its chest/torso and fold the dinobot head backward into position. You also have to position the upper legs to form its waist. The torso is the only die-cast part as far as I know and articulation is limited on the arms which has no elbows so you can just move it up or down. The legs can bend at the knees and can move forward or backwards and the head cannot move sideways.
Commander/Grimlock comes with two (2) weapons -- his sword now in chrome and his two-barreled blaster. The original sword is plastic and colored red. Its eyes were colored light blue while the original sports a red one.
Score: 4/5
WST Slag/Flamethrower
Dinobot mode:
Slag/Flamethrower is almost everyone's favorite dinosaur - a tricerotop. I don't know why it was called Flamethrower but I could assume they associated it with Slag's weapons. Anyway, the figure is a good replica of the original G1 Slag. The figure is solid and contains die-cast part in the chest area the only difference I can tell is the color/make of the dinobot horns. The original G1 had plastic/rubber horns that are colored read but other than that the figure is a dead-on replica of G1 Slag. The only thing I dont like in the dinobot mode are the horns because they are loose and tend to move sideways with a slight touch its probably for safety issues or a safety mechanism so you won't accidentally break it. The horns being chrome is a nice touch and I think better that G1 Slag had they have been the same size. Articulation is on the mouth (close/open), four legs and that's it.
Score: 5/5
Robot mode:
Flamethrower/Slag's transformation is the same as G1 Slag. Move the tail upwards, position its hind legs, split the lower body and swing it down wards to reveal its feet, open the chest to reveal the torso and fold the mouth downwards to reveal its head. Put the two fist into place and that's it. The only difference I can see is the color of the head. WST Flamethrower's face is colored red and the eyes blue while G1 Slag has a black head and red eyes. This WST Flamethrower is G1 accurate since in the cartoon Slag's face is colored red. The only thing I don't like are the detachable hands. JustiToys could have made it retractable and not detachable as you can easily loose those because of its size. Flamethrower comes with two (2) weapons, a sword and a gun and yes the original G1 Slag comes with a plastic red gun while this one comes in chrome which is pretty good.
Score: 4/5
Note: I have'nt applied any decals on the two figures but it comes with its own decal for more detailing.
Overall, if you're a fan of the dinobots then these figures are definitely for you. They are priced competitively and it will not burn your wallet so if you're looking to complete your own dinobot collection then give this line a chance. The last two WST dinobots Sludge and Swoop are next to be released so better be on the lookout for those too and before I forget there's also a WST Snarl.
Thanks for looking!
