For doing panel linings with a techpen, do i need to apply any type of coating or just line away ? if you're so meticulous when it comes to paints or for a 'masterpiece', i think it's better to put a clear topcoat first to your base paint, before applying tech pens panel lining.
why? if ever you made mistake, it's either clean the errors with tech pen eraser or for last resort, dab a cotton bud with thinner to erase the tech pen marks, right? the purpose of this is to protect the base paint with clear top coat. so every now and then you make mistakes and correct it with cotton buds with thinner, the base paint is well protected. unless of course you're using a thinner for the base paint too? now that would be a problem. if you use thinner for enamel, then it won't do any damage on your acrylic/lacquer base paints. tama ba mga guys? i'm not into this procedure, pero i think i've read na rin so many times. so i hope tama ako with the thinner explanation. hehehe. ;D
that'y why i use my watercolor/postercolor paints for my details and panel linings. it's water-based. so no harm on the base paint without clear topcoat. and the other reason why i don't use na multiple coats (base/topcoat) because i use spraycans only. 1-2-3 coats, makapal na. not like if you use airbrush, you can dilute it with thinner. so those 1-2-3 coats with A/B is just the half of my 1-2-3 coats of spraypaint. that's what i did with my MG Freedom before. tingin ko makapal. kaya mahirap na i-move. here's what i did:
no base paint (i used Freedom's default color): Gloss Topcoat + Paint some Armors, Internal+ Apply Decals + Gloss Topcoat + Panel Lining + Flat Topcoat
to explain the first gloss topcoat & the second one. i have to do that to sandwich the decals. because if you don't do that, it will leave 'silvering' on the edges esp the sticker-type ones. sorry, i am uber-meticulous but i have no patience. hehehe. ;D and also to protect my spraypaint before doing panel lining.
but now with my HG MKII, here's what i do: Spraypaint (i use Gloss paint first) + Detailing + Decals + Panel Lining + Flat Topcoat
so far, so good. and i can say that i'm more satisfied now.
hope that helps. my 2 pesoses.
what do you think is the best industrial spray can for gloss clear spray cans to protect the base color of the kit?? thanks

and adding to that, best may mean different things to different people. maybe best because it is more cheap to use or maybe it covers better. ** oh, I was the one who said "Depends on what you like, just make sure its for plastic" ;D

what do you think is the best industrial spray can for gloss clear spray cans to protect the base color of the kit?? thanks i first used TOA brand before on my Freedom. PYLOX clear on my unfinished Red Frame Astray. just don't change brand if you're in the middle of building kits. be sure that you use the same brand until you finish the kit. for consistencies. tobatzthats of those questions i ask sometime ago and got the answer of "Depends on what you like, just make sure its for plastic" its a non definite answer.. no offense meant bro. but don't get sad or confused if you get answer/replies like these. i might reply the same also, because i have an experience of asking this before and also get the same answer. and i'm sure that before someone says "Depends on what you like, just make sure its for plastic", he mentioned a brand or two, right?
i once asked my friend Jake before on topcoats, and he asked me if i were on a tight-budget, i said 'yes'. so he told me to use Painter's Touch Flat Finish Clear Spray Paint for topcoat. but i end up buying Mr. Super Clear Topcoat insted, which btw is more expensive than the Painter's Touch. in other words, still a personal preferences... and depends on what you like.
peace!

Question: is it all right for me to simply paint over gold plated kits like the akatsuki or the hyaku shiki or do i need to apply a primer first then paint? TIA!

since we dont have and idea on what specific brands we like so can we get a reponse ranked according to what you believe is the best brand and followed by the budget brands or something. its actually more confusing for newbies like me to get a "whatever you like the best" as a reply since i personally dont have a single idea on what brands are avalable and which brands are worth considering

I just went and tried any plastic safe spray paint out there. so far, it has been good with RJ. "Krylon Fusion" is also an option but it's expensive compared to RJ. Don't get the regular krylon because it will eat your Gundam kit.

neodark bro, here's what i learned so far about these industrial spray paints available at ACE/DIY/Hardware stores in use for GUNPLA:
1. Color Selections so far, all the brands (Pylox, RJ, Krylon Fusion: for Plastic use - expensive, Do-IT, TOA, Nikko, etc) have a wide range of colors. light shades to dark shades. personally, i just check on Pylox the colors that i need to use. if it's not available, i'll look for it with other brands. all the brands mentioned before ay nasubukan ko na. except for the Krylon. the rule here: use paints that is harmless to plastic - won't eat away; if ever you use certain brand's color, you have to stick with it 'hanggang maubos'. don't use different brand's color 'pag kinapos ka' while building the kit. and remember to use the same type of paint (lacquer/enamel/acrylic epoxy).
2. Budget Concerns true. this industrial spray paints can really help a lot when it comes to budget. you can buy 2 industrial spray paints with the price of 1 branded spray paints. but the thing is... branded spray paints are really highly-recommended for plastic toy use. but there's also some issues with this branded paints. which branded paints is 'more makapit'? so in other words, 'di rin tayo sure' on branded paints. cause they have also some issues. that's why personally, i go with industrial spray paints for budget reasons. besides, i'm no good modeller. just having this hobby of building and painting. just haev to please myself.
but to be honest, if ever i'll get rich, i'll buy branded paints.
3. Trial & Error here's when the part of "depends on what you like" comes in. after you tested every brands... after you spend your initial budget on paints that you will hate it (it happened to me too)... after all the hard work on one special Gundam kit... you will know for yourself the paint that you will like the next time you visit ACE/DIY/Hardware Stores.
hope that helps a lot, bro. because, i learned some lessons on my own about spray paints the hard way. my 2 centavoses.
happy building! peace, signing off...

how about the bosny brand, do you guys have any experience with it? im planning on painting my gundams also no experience yet what so ever, tight budget too oppsss... this is the one brand i forgot to mention. i've used that before. same experience with Nikko. i like it. ;D wide selection too on colors. but not as wide as Pylox. pero all the major colors are there so no worries.
actually, for me, pare-pareho lang halos all the available industrial spray paints (personally, i don't use enamel spray paints). the thing is... they vary on colors. sometimes 'white' from Pylox is different from the 'white' of Bossny/Nikko/etc. that's why i post it on my previous post that if ever you use one specific 'color' on the kit better use one brand. if ever na 'maubusan' ka while building the kit, don't buy a substitute brand. look for the same brand too. before i thought it was just the same. but when the paint dries, 'lumabas din ang tunay na kulay'. the other white is creamy-colored than the other one. 'buti na lang old kit yun'. hehehe.
nweiz, just try and look what's the best brand for you. that's why it's so expensive to have this hobby for just the hits & misses on building it.
peace.
