hi guys, i just wanted to ask if anyone knows how to paint shiny gold that would look comparable to gold-plated kits? www.hlj.com/product/BAN900584www.hlj.com/product/VOL21175with the MG strike freedom (regular and full burst) fast approaching, a lot of people (myself included) think that the price difference is too impractical if we only want the shiny effect. 1/100 knights of gold kits are approaching too and the kit is molded in gray ... volks then expect that modellers can paint it like the boxarts. i've tried some gold spray paints but they usually tend to be darker and lacks the luster. am planning to look for gold leaf and try if it would work. of course, i'd check the price first ... closest i made to shiny metallic is with this one (pardon it being a bit dusty ... left it lying around for a few years already ) help will be greatly appreciated

we both have the same issues. hehehehe. ;D
i heard, Gunze / Mr. Color has a great metallic paints. and they do suggest in using Airbrush. metallic paint is not suitable for handbrushing. but don't worry, i think there's a spray can available for Gunze and Mr. Color.

firstly you cannot emulate the plated look using painting. they are two different method and no one has come up with the way to simulate the plated look using paints... Many came up with the method but when you compare side by side they don't even come close...
you could use electro-plating but of coz that's impractical for most of us - unless you have relatives running the factory ^__^

electro-plating (they say) works on metalic surfaces only. i've tried looking for imitation gold leaf earlier, but to no avail. i'll try looking some other time.
if the stuff cost more than 1300, then full burst na lang ba? hehe nah, i want to learn this one out ... might come in handy in the future.

Thanks to Gundam Base for the photo This one I think is close to Tamiya's gold leaf... Maybe a little polishing can make it shiny... IMO, this is better than Gold Chrome plated ala Gold Frame Amatsu...

@mervin: that's nice if tamiya gold leaf would yield that result. but i don't think it's that shiny. we are talking gold leaf colored paint and not gold leafing right? or perhaps i just mixed the gold leaf paint wrong .... perhaps we could try their gold spray can sometime. @no3ljm: the gold you wanted seems to be lightly sprayed gold on red primer. here's the result of my experiment (on a bootleg plastic) today guys ... 1,2 are simply sprayed by 3 coats of bronze-gold. "gold" paint yielded dark color 3,4 have been buffed in between 2nd and 3rd coating am still waiting for it to really dry and am planning 2,4 to be buffed after the third coat. btw, be careful when buying bronze paints. there seems to be a brand that are dysfunctional like win. either that or all the stocks in rob's place are expired. i had it replaced but still the same after a few spray. just lost P270+ that way. the one i got right now cost a bit cheaper (can't recall the exact price and name... will post later). the polishing compound used for buffing cost 180... grrrr this experiment is starting to get too costly. i'd hate life if it reaches P1300 hehehehe

hehehe, already tried 3 cans of paint and a polishing compound. perhaps i should have just saved the money and add it to buy the full burst instead hahaha =) anyway, i wanted to find that bootleg 1/100 strike that was mentioned in a thread here so that i have somewhere to use these gold paints anyway hahaha
