I have yet to see individual buttons for sale, the only ones I've seen are usually packaged with the face plate. If a button isn't functioning, there are rubber contacts beneath the buttons that relays the button presses to the psp. Its these rubber contacts that might be defective. Here are the screws you have to take out to open the psp. This is for the old fat model. I'm not sure if it's the same for the slim. For the 2 on the left, you'll have to peel off the sticker to get to the screws. This voids the warranty btw. Bale 4 screws would be black, while the one on the bottom is silver.

Regarding the scratches on your PSP, if the scratches are on the silver ring there's a replacement part for that. Some shops sell replacement parts, I got mine at Brochiere though they tend to charge a bit high for the spare parts. If you got the whole back part scratched, you'll going to have the entire back casing replaced. If it's just the UMD door then you're lucky as you'll only have to replace the door. Your best bet against scratches is to get a case for your psp since they're really prone to getting scratched.
To change the buttons, you'll going to have to crack open the psp & take out the face plate. Beware as opening the psp will surely get some dust & lint trapped between the face plate & the lcd. Just make sure the lcd & the back side of the face plate is free from dust before you put them back. AVOID any abrasive contact on the backside of the face plate. I'll see if I can post a pic on how to open the psp.

Only 3 more assassinations for Assassin's Creed. Got hold of DMC4 for the PS3, my first time playing a DMC game. Grabe, nonstop action!!! ;D
Also playing the Patapon demo for the PSP. It's a wierd mix of side-scroller, rhythm, & adventure. Can be downloaded from the PS Store website for free.

Yes. Except if you bought it off the online PS store. Although some people mod their psp so they can run homebrew applications, the main reason still is to be able to play ripped games.

jeeg: The version you're referring to is the firmware version. Think of it as something like the PSPs operating system. As of now, there are only 2 versions of psp available, the old model & the slim. The slim originally comes with the 3.60 firmware. Sony will continually update the firmware with every batch of psp they manufacture.
