OLA MY DEAR FRIENDS!!! ;D I know this question may have been answered before but I still haven't seen/heard the best answer. Which is better? I know it is a matter of opinion or preference but I still need more feedback from you guys. I need to know the pros and cons of using flat or gloss! why am i asking the question? here's why: i've read that majority of the modelers out their use flat, so i copycat them. i read the danny choo tutorial on gunpla and he also prefers flat. so i used flat on my freedom and it worked fine! now i tried using flat again on my aile strike and i swear i effing ruined it! it turned almost all white bcoz of that freaking topcoat! that was the final step of my gunpla and i blew it! now i know that if you spray flat topcoat too close it would really really dull the color! i sprayed the topcoat at least 5inches away from the kit, somebody gave me advice that i should have sprayed it at least "6 to 8 inches" away. so i guess i should have sprayed it an inch further and my would have been great. now i know the problem with flat is, it really dulls the color if you spray correctly. in other words: HASSEL!now im about to buy my MG strike freedom and Im really really thinking about using Mr.Hobby Semi Gloss topcoat instead of flat, is there a possiblity if i sprayed it wrongly it would cause problems also? cmon guys, help out a frustrated modeler here. should i go for flat or semi gloss for my MG Strike Freedom? Professional advice really needed.........

6 to 8 inches away? i think i'm the one who gave you that advice. hehehe. j/k
ok, since im no professional modeler, what i will give is personal opinion or personal preferences. i like my Gundams to be flat looking. matte finish. because if i used gloss topcoats, it will just look like a regular toy. obvious na obvious na laruan. but some modellers like their kits to have a gloss looking finishes. why? to make it look like a real metal finish looking Gundams. as if kakalabas pa lang nang factory. no blemishes. no weathering washes. just clean-waxed-Gundams. it's like after you clean you car -- you like it sparkling-glittering.
now in using flat topcoats. not all the colors will be dull if you use them. if you use Bright Cobalt Blue and topcoat it with flat. light lang yung pagka-dull nung finish. less obvious yung pagka-dull. but when you use Navy Blue and topcoat it with flat, medyo obvious yung pagka-dull. and remember, 2 to 3 light coats of flat topcoats sprayed 6 to 8inches away, is enough. (assuming you're spraying it from left to right or up and down.)
and yes, i experienced too what you have experienced before. the colors really got dull at first. but that didn't stop me in experimenting again with flat topcoats. so far, i'm happy with what i have accomplished.
now here's some (personal opinion) pros and cons i know with topcoats (i'm using No Paint Technique):
FLAT - it can hide away the scrathces made by light sanding - when you decided to put weathering effect on your kit, flat is preferred - looks great with photography.
GLOSS - light sanding scratches is visible - you cannot do weathering effects on gloss kit. it will look unnatural. unless you spray it first with flat topcoat. - light bounces back when you do photoshoot on your Gundams (if you're the type who loves taking photos of your collections)
*edit: i forgot, if you use metallic paints/colors, it's not advisable to put gloss topcoats. it will lose the 'natural shine' of the paint. that's based on experience.
**edit: you can try and visit www.mechapinoy.net for more professional advices. here's their thread about Topcoats. and here's another one posted by kamadona regarding Tamiya Flat Base / Tamiya Clear[/b].[/size] now, if you're still not happy with flat, you can use the semi-gloss topcoats. my 2 pesoses. hope that helps. JOKE! to be quite honest, i actually like my gundams that look like it just came out the factory. im a neat and clean person so there is still a possibility i might go ahead with semi gloss. i'll check out those links later. my mind is still open whether i should use gloss or flat.

How about gold colored kits like the Akatsuki and Hyaku Shiki? Any suggestion on making them stay shiny using the gloss topcoat. This is like asking how do I make the gold stay shiny after topcoating with gloss coat? Any special precautions/reminders/pre-requisites/procedures?
Thanks!!!

This is like asking how do I make the gold stay shiny after topcoating with gloss coat? Any special precautions/reminders/pre-requisites/procedures? Thanks!!! based on watching the Gunpla Modeling at YouTube, i haven't seen someone spray topcoats on the metallic paints/parts of the kit. the one i saw, Gundam MKII Titans, he masked the silver painted internal parts with masking tape while he airbrushed it with flat clear coat. check the time frame from 07:12 to 07:35. that is, unless, he spraypainted it with gloss clear first before he put some masking.
but based on my experience, i never liked what happened to my Red Frame Astray before. i spraypainted it with Bronze color. it looks nice as is. i was concern with the paint that's why i decided to spraypaint it with gloss coat to protect the paint. after spraypainting it, it lost the natural shine it had.
that's why some of the expert modellers strip off those chrome plated kits, before repainting it with metallic/chrome paints again. unless, the chrome plated kits will not have 'pangingitim' over in time due to weather and aging.
if you want, you can try spraypainting gloss topcoat on your extra chrome plated sprues just to see the effect.another question! what would happen if i use glossy topcoat over flat? would it it be glossy but still have that discoloration with my flat? technically, it will become glossy. as for the discoloration concern, if you put gloss clear coat on any flat colored paint, the color will have a little darker tone.
here's something to-do to have a visual example. get a colored newspaper. look for a page that has a colored print ad. cover it with plastic book cover. you can see now that the flat colorness of the print ad will have a darker tone.
my 2 pesoses. hope that helps.

I'd like to contribute my first airbrush paintjob. 1st picture is plain acrylic paint finish, no clear coats. Paint used is Gunze Sangyo Aqueous Hobby Color. (ACRYLIC) Here's the finish after I applied Gunze Sangyo Aqueous Hobby Color GLOSS CLEAR. Adds a little more shine.

this thread is informative.
i used to paint and airbrush my models (gundams and military kits) long long time ago. but i cant invest in a new airbrush, and dont have the time to fully paint and weather a model these days. and i am already satisfied with the molded-in colors of current MGs.
here's my question: maganda ba ang end result if i only spray topcoat / clearcoat to a model?
i am planning to apply panel lines first on bare plastic (humbrol enamel para cgurado mag stick un panel line sa glossy bare plastic), stick the decals, then finally spray "matte" clear / topcoat from spray can (like gunze sangyo or tamiya).
have you guys tried it? spraying clear topcoat to bare unpainted plastic. maganda ba un result?
tnx in advance.
Ed
