BTW, for folks who are still waiting to watch Superman Returns on IMAX, I overheard one ticket seller mention that it will be shown until August 1 only.
I was at Mall of Asia yesterday buying tickets for July 30(sigh, all the weekend tickets have been completely sold out until then) when I overheard it. I was in a hurry to grab some lunch so I couldn't confirm what I heard.
SM MoA's IMAX ticket seats have pretty much sold out on the weekends(whole days! From 11:00AM to 11:00PM on July 22-23, and July 29, all sold out) and on Weekdays the 8:00PM slots have been sold out as well(the remaining timeslots of 2:00PM and 5:00PM on weekdays have plenty of empty seats though)
I'm not sure but on weekdays the 11:00AM schedule over at IMAX is showing something else instead of Superman Returns(according to another ticket seller, Nascar? Dinosaurs?). Superman returns starts showing at 2:00Pm onwards at IMAX supposedly.

Checkmate!, Too bad for Superman. I'm pretty sure the studio was indeed disappointed since it took what $260M to make it? They should have gone further with Superman returns beyond Lex Luthor I guess maybe trace his mythology (krypton) the only exciting scene was the airplane rescue even Brandon has not that many lines : ( and rumor has it that he is contemplating a possible spread for Playgilr for $500,000.00. Huh! The curse is imminent I guess. We'll that's just me anyway we have a lot of things to look forward to anyway... go Spidey- go!!!!!!!!!!! www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_27267008.shtml

We'll that's just me anyway we have a lot of things to look forward to anyway... go Spidey- go!!!!!!!!!!! www.nationalledger.com/artman/publish/article_27267008.shtmlActually Superman Returns was just expected to earn a little more than Batman Begins, but of course it could have been a lot more. Don't also forget that the box office returns listed is only for U.S., Superman Returns will be a returning a profit. This is good news especially with the development woes that cost the studio over 50M before the movie was developed, they will finally get back. That curse is B.S. Smallville is doing very well, and Superman Returns finally got off the ground and will earn back more than enough from the development hell it was in. Also comparing this to Pirates 2, it is not surprising that Pirates won. Sure, Superman is more recognizable, but the Pirates of the Carribean movie already gained a loyal fanbase from those who loved the first movie. I personally enjoyed Pirates 2 a lot more because it was more fun. I share the same sentiments as many people who watched Superman Returns, it felt too much like a romance story then a superhero movie. The Spider-man movies did a good balance in this, and making the Spider-Man movies the superior film. I also liked Batman Begins better. There was not a lot of action sequences as well. I wished they actually started from the beginning instead of making the movie a sequel of the Christopher Reeve movies. Who cares that Smallville did that, this is very different anyway.

Here's some interesting gossip from the E!Online website regarding the true cost of Superman Returns. www.eonline.com/Gossip/Answer/index.jsp?id=115&num=2So, it actually needs to make $400-$520 Million just to break even? Of course this is assuming the marketing cost equals the production cost, but at the very least Marketing would be at $100M for a big budget movie like this one. Please note that this article was posted last July 15,2006. So the weekend returns are a bit off. Gold

Hehe when watching Supes Returns on IMAX, there are only certain scenes(roughly 20mins worth of scenes redone in 3D) where you wear the glasses. The whole movie isn't in 3D. There will be a green icon flashed on the bottom of the screen which tells you the 3D scene is now on and it's time to put on the glasses. And a red icon will appear once "regular, non-3D" scenes are resumed and you can take off the glasses at this point(until the next 3D scene). There really aren't any extra scenes(I think) when you watch it at IMAX and at any regular theater. Just some of the flying scenes(and the Kent Farm scene) redone in 3D for the experience. IMAX is currently showing Ant Bully but still shows Superman Returns on certain timeslots. Folks still interested in watching it in IMAX can still catch it, just buy the tickets a few days in advance first. Gold

Ahh I see, my gripe with the IMAX theater was that the aisles were too far apart, it was embarassing to try to go to the washroom in the middle of the movie(especially if you've got a kid in tow) BTW Here's an interview with Bryan Singer with Newsarama recently, he more or less blames "bad Marketing" for the poor domestic returns. forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=78755here's an interesting post by Violent Gorilla over at the Newsarama boards regarding the "cutting up" of the box office returns by taxes, the theaters, advertisments, etc.(scroll to the lower part of the page). Not sure if it's entirely true but it does make sense. forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=78755&page=5Gold

...and Singer doesnt acknowledge the fact that there is something really wrong with his movie Superman having a kid... being an absentee father... Lois not knowing that it's Superman's kid... Superman going back to Krypton... etc. etc... veering away from the comic book mythos is a disaster... going Singer's way (less action, more talk... focus more on love story, etc) doomed the franchise... ... take note that the figures that we see are based on sales volume... this is a very poor benchmark... we simply couldnt compare the ticket prices now against those 20 years ago... they should let us see the ticket sales (how many tickets were sold) so we can have an objective way of benchmarking superman returns with Donner's superman 1 and 2... ... i think marketing did a good job... it doesnt take a marketing guru to promote superman... his name speaks for itself... all they have to do is announce to the world that there is a superman movie and viola...
