in gundam wing nobody really stole a gundam and used it as their own. as far as i know those that they stole or more likely borrow, just to escape somewhere out of harms way lang. but the main mechs nila was really their own. hindi po ba? archwell if ever there would be a gundam pilot school, may age limit dun, 11 to 20 lang. di na tayo pwede dun. kaya nga hopefully they guys from sunrise would think of a story na hindi focus on the "kids" but on those unsung heroes like the crews, techs, cooks? ;D. . . tapos in a twist of faith happen to "steel" one of the "kids" gundam and then happen to end the war by killing all. . . kill them all!!!

actually amuro ray didnt "steal" the rx-78. he was just around the facility when the zakus attack - and seeing that the EFSF's "new weapon" was just lying there - he decided to use it against them. with the manual in his lap, the end-result was that he was chosen to be its pilot because of his "amazing natural skills".
there were also many instances when amuro wanted to leave the white base and away from the war - but of course, he returned back after seeing his friends and comrades (frau, sayla, etc) in danger from the impending zeon threat - its the same reason for kira yamato in the episodes 1-26 in GS - to protect his friends in the ship.
anavel gato is a different case however, as stealing the GP02 was already part of a plan devised a few years ago as part of "operation stardust".
camille bidan's case is somewhat different, although his methods are similar: enraged on how abusive the titans are, he stole the RX-178 and used it to scare off the titans officer that was harassing him earlier. later when the AEUG forces led by Quattro Bajina arrived, he decided to join them.
judau ashta's case is more of being naive and led by poverty - as he was fooled by yazan gable to steal the zeta for him, but instead he decided to keep it to sell for a good price. a few episodes later, he comes back every now and then to the ahgama to use the zeta to defend it against the neo zeon threat.
also in GW as ikabod mentioned, nobody stole a gundam there - its more of like "borrowing" for a short time - in this case there was this running joke - the wing zero was the "ms ng bayan" as it was literally passed around by the main characters and such.

another constant in the gundam story line is that some people are always trying to crash a big THING onto earth (e.g. space colonies)
i hope they could think of something else and forget about DROPPING who knows what from the sky?

dropping something BIG from the sky is a VERY IMTIMIDATING threat - as you've watched movies like armageddon, etc. big things that fall to earth have nasty, catastropic and long term effects.
in the Char's Counterattack movie, Char Aznable himself attempted to drop astoroid axis (bigger than any colony) to earth to finally cease its ability to support life thus would give its residents no choice but to migrate to space - as he believed if they did, they would finally evolve to newtypes.

hmm that is a good plot, but don't you think that the writers are using it too often in the gundam mythos?

Uber Jam: A Gundam series without the threat of something falling from space (or attacking from space, like in G Gundam) is kinda weird, since that is part of the Gundam Mythos. It's a matter also of the need to be readily identifiable as a gundam plot. But yes, I think it's overused. That's part of the reason why I like F-91 and 0080.
Ikabod: because it would cause diplomatic tension. if earth decided to get rid of "useless satellites", they'd be stepping on perceived territory of spacenoids - and to them, all big space real estate, stagnant or not, is still real estate...

another thing to add to the Gundam dont you ever notice the evolution of mech designs? They both have the same similarities in design however they evolve.
Like for instance
RX-78-2 = RX-178 = GAT-X105 Strike Gundam MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki = ORB-01 Akatsuki MSZ-006 = MVF-M11C Murasame MS07B Gouf = ZGMF-2000 Gouf Ignited MS-09 Dom = ZGMF-XX09T Dom Trooper MS-06F Zaku II = ZGMF-1000 Zaku Warrior
White Base (aka Trojan Horse) = ArchAngel Class
What else do I miss? I think they were many .... ;D

i think that's how they intended it to be... sort of like making a "remake" of the old mechas and adding in new ideas and whatsit.

maybe what archaznable isa saying eh they have changed already the model names, they should have also made a big change or really a new model. like in cars, a civic is ibang iba with the accord, something like that. well dont know about these nga lang : MS07B Gouf = ZGMF-2000 Gouf Ignited MS-09 Dom = ZGMF-XX09T Dom Trooper MS-06F Zaku II = ZGMF-1000 Zaku Warrior i think they should really be looking like the same, again same with cars, same model different year make lang

its been said that bandai wanted to give "new fans" (fans of gs and those who have no if not limited knowledge of the older series like 0079, zeta, etc) a glimpse of these "rehashed" designs.
something like this: hey! the gouf ignited is cool! true, but theres an older version of it in the earlier series! oh?! lemme see!
(and the end result is, if the person searches them out and likes the old OYW designs, they get to buy the merchandise related to it). its both a mix of marketing and natural curiosity.
