well take a pretty close look at this pic... this shot was taken last year, at Toei's anniversary in libis. this guy is wearing a self made costume, and didn't invest that much to look more like shaider.. and look at fuma le-ar, compare it to GMA's Zaido.. and the thing that i hated most about zaido, it is the official sequel to shaider. and 23 years after shaider, and this is all we get?

he is not filipino. dennis trillo's character is an alien. besides, the original shaider also often mentions that he is the descendant of the warrior shaider that defeated fuuma 12,000 years ago. the point in saying that is to intimidate fuuma, "my descendant kicked your butt, and i can do the same!"
the costume pictured above looks like the guy is wearing it like a "sando". and the helmet is misaligned, it's like someone twisted it sideways.
in fairness, in the case of this shaider replica, it's easier to get it right when you have a previous established designed to copy off from. i mean, this costume pictured above wasnt designed by a filipino.
the zaido costumes look bulky coz they had to be big enough to fit the actual actors, unlike the shaider costume in japan, it could be a stuntman in there who was smaller than hiroshi tsuburaya.

magandang tignan ang homemade costume na yan kapag nagpoposing, kumusta naman kaya yan kung gagamitin sa outdoor fight scene na may blasting?
"that homemade costume may look good when the guy wearing it is just posing, how is it when he is fighting outdoors and there are explosions?"
there are a lot of fight scenes in the original shaider where the costume is really dirty and you can see it come apart... there are also scenes in warehouses in other toku where the crowd seems to be fleeing but they actually just stayed inside the place and hid behind a box.
i dont know if they are doing their own stunts, but the zaidos have scenes where they talk with their helmets off and therefore, the actors have to be shot wearing them but with their heads exposed. i guess GMA didn't think of using smaller suit actors for fight scenes to make the costumes more tight-fitting.
robocop was based on gavan too...
what's scares me is what GMA may be thinking of doing next... they could buy the rights to VOLTES V from TSP and since it wasnt all that big in japan, TOEI will grant it. GMA would probably make a live action tagalog version, and like sentai, use the SOC VOLTES V in the scenes with stop motion animation fighting a guy in a rubber suit. they'll use the same excuse, that voltes v was first seen on their channel and it's "only fitting"...

i am watching the pilot episode of zaido right now, so far they retained certain "toku elements"... the way the characters talk, they pause a lot which is like toku. their movements are also exagerrated like toku. when the scene shows the big ships, there is a subtitle at the bottom saying what the ship is, just like the japanese characters when the same thing happens in toku. a lot of the clothing in dennis trillo's home planet have an arabic look, and the romantic scene between him and diana zubiri looked a lot like anakin and padme in star wars. that's all i have noticed so far. i am trying to not to look hard for flaws. i am trying to look for what they did to pass toei's standards.
ian de leon's character looks so much like M BISON of street fighter. sorry i had to say that again, i cant get it out of my head...

it's quite early to tell, but from what i saw and compare with kapamilya channel, the kapamilya efx and costume crew are kinda in the lead. SO far ha. just one episode pa lang eh. Well, if ur going to copy somebody's paper, if not perfect then at least copy correctly na lang para worth the effort.

I watched it but couldnt bear to see the whole thing.
I have to admit, i was completely biased when i watched it. Every single detail was crap for me: the acting, the cast, the production, and "oh the horror" costumes.
But after mulling over it for a while, i came to understand why i hated Zaido...
I was used to the old Japanese way of acting - remember those cheesy acting we all love? The campy way they move like toy soldiers, always hyper to the point that post-prod editing had to fast-forward some scenes to make it look like they were fighting in lightning fast motion? Zaido action sequences were like snails to me, compared to that original 70's show.
I wanted the old look done in a new way - remember how we hated Micheal Bay for raping the Transformer designs, only to love the way he redid the script and action in the movie? I expected the same with Zaido: the same spirit of Shaider done in a fresh light (or script). It was like watching a dull Pinoy matinee show. Even the acting did nothing to accent my love of the franchise.
The show was not meant for me, it was meant for those who do NOT know Shaider - yes, i learned this philosophy while working with Hero TV and got to talk to producers of shows. They dont care about how we love the old series, they care about the generation who doesnt have an idea about the series, which is a lot compared to us stubborn 80's generation kids who watched the show and loved it like cult members. They're gambling on the fact that those non-anime/japanese culture/henshin/etc etc members of society who loved Raymart Santiago and Dianne Zubiri to be just that, watching these actors in scifi fantasy roles doing their thing they want to see: their favorite actors/actresses, and not the spirit of Shaider the show.
I mean, who cares, right? Ratings of the masses are the ones they care about.

Zaido = Corny lame actors/actress, worst costumes gaya gaya n lang ang mga PINOY, cant make their own heroes and stories? pati GAME SHOWS ginaya na (deal or no deal, they also imitate fear factor logo)

deal or no deal is not an imitation or ripoff. ABSCBN bought the rights for it. same as "1 VS 100", and "Big Brother". franchise shows like AMERICAN IDOL, DEAL OR NO DEAL have their own versions in many countries, licensed versions complete with rights.
it doesnt matter if the concept is original or not, if you like it, you will still watch it. KAMEN RIDER RYUUKI's story is a ripoff of HIGHLANDER, KAMEN RIDER FAIZ'S concept is a ripoff of BLADE [wesley snipes]. KAMEN RIDER BLADE'S background story is very similar to ALIENS VS PREDATOR. in DEKARANGER, there are 2 characters named MURPHY and CLARENCE, both names are from ROBOCOP, and DEKARANGER is a police sentai. where's the originality in that?
and let's not forget that sentai is pretty much just 35 [and still going] yearly shows where the same thing happens everytime.

Zaido is "ok" judging by GMA prime time show standards. But that's what bugs me about it. I still wish they stayed true w/ the Shaider story pacing, and it would have been nice if the had like 1 new villain that has to be defeated in every episode. Zaido is just too dramatized IMHO
