on applying the dark shades, do you have to paint the whole part? or just go paint the edges and panel lines, dahil dun mo lang rin naman palalabasin yung effect?

Oh so Max Watanabe painting is like this: I thought Watanabe style is a diff style cause of the black black shading talk. Actually it doesn't have to be black. As long as you can come up with a dark shade of the color then that's better. For the justice I didn't use black but maroon for shades. Just my 2 cents though.

or if you are too lazy to do the MAX style you can mix little darker colour and spray lightly along the edges... viola! MAX shading he he

hey guys, almost forgot about this thread. nope, i still did not try using max style of painting. started this thread last year, pero tis only now i'm beginning my gunpla purchase pero from the looks of it, dun sa pictures i got from checkmate's link (tnx dude), parang sobra hirap sya. you gotta have a very nice airbrush, with super fine tip (which i don't have, i only use tamiya spray works), ultra steady hands para di matakpan un edges and para even un pre shading. dudes, it's a lotta work. mahirap din i correct if there is a mistake, spray ka ulit pre shading. kaya nga master modeller na ang tawag ke max watanabe (j/k) pero here's a tip- i've learned this when i used to model 1/35 military WW2 tanks and figures. we used "pastel chalk" a lot in weathering (buy at national bookstore). just ground the thing up into "fine powder" with sandpaper, collect the dust into a small bowl or platter. then apply the fine dust with fine brush (#00 to #0) sa mga edges and panel lines. then you can seal the powder with top/clear coat. pag malayo, or in photos din, it can look like max shading. example- you can use a light blue pastel chalk for white basepaint, and black for darker basepaints like red or blue. you can also use black pastel chalk for exhaust stains under the boosters. madame talaga application nya sa weathering pag me mistake in applying the powder, just remove it with cotton buds dampen with alcohol or water (before applying any top or clear coat). it comes with many many colors, and you can also pick the colors you want, you don't have to buy the whole box. meron din sa enriquez art shop sa recto, mas mura dun hope this helps, best regards guys

bro, here's a sample product of Pastel Chalk Sticks. just a small reminder, be sure that if you're going to use pastel chalks for weathering, do not use oil-based pastels.

dagdag ko lang ito sa tips ni bro mannyD. chalk pastel for weathering is best for flat finish kit. it won't adhere if the base paint is gloss. if you want a gloss finish kit, chalk pastel is not for you. it won't look good if you use gloss topcoat with this kind of weathering. baka lang magmukhang putik yung ginawa nyo. so if you use this application, don't forget to put flat topcoat after.
hope that helps.

yup, this is what you usually use on weathering military crafts, instant flat nga kasi, and well if you have a sister you can use her make-up kit rin.

hi guys, yeah pastel chalk can be more subtle and even looking than pre shading sometimes, kase you have control dun sa powder na lalagay mo. you apply it like paint, just dip the fine pointed brush sa powder, then hand brush gently on the edges and panel lines. and yeah it sticks best to matte finish. minsan you think madame na nalagay mo, then after putting top / clear coat mag iiba sya bigla, magiging more subtle. parang magic if you like the really weathered look, like the gundams in MS08th team, you can use light green, reddish brown, and sandy yellow pastel chalks. parang me mud and dirt un look. if you like naman to weather space type gundams, pag white basepaint, you can use light blue or light grey colors. sa darker basepaints, use black or dark grey. and like no3ljm said, use un square pastel chalks, un parang chalk talaga. and not those round oil pastels tnx
