Toys R Us to Open Philippine Outlets

Toys R Us Inc., a U.S.-based toy chain, will open its first four outlets in the Philippines next year, its partner company said Wednesday.

The Robinsons Retail Group, which operates a chain of stores in the country, has formed a partnership with Hong Kong's Li & Fung Retailing Group, sub-licensor of Toys R Us in Asia, to bring the toy company to Manila, Robinsons President Lance Gokongwei told reporters.

He refused to provide details on investments and the potential revenue.

The Philippines will be the sixth country in Asia in which Toys R Us operates, in addition to Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

Gokongwei said the longer-term plan is to open Toys R Us stores in key cities of the Philippines.

"After 18 months, I'm sure there will be opportunities to go outside metropolitan Manila," he said.

I don't think they'll go as far as opening a new mall. What they'll probably do is renovate part of their existing malls to accomodate for larger floor space.

It may not happen soon as I think one of the newsbits I saw said that they'll only look at going outside Metro Manila after 18 months.

It does stand to reason that they would setup one in Cebu as the logistics partner of Robinsons has a distribution center in Cebu.

I guess the trick here is that TRU has to do well in Metro Manila before any provincial expansion will be considered.

Truth be told, I still doubt that they will open here in Cebu. I think they might just change their toy department, that's all; make it into like Toy Kingdom in SM. But I'm not so sure how it will attract new customers, demographic-wise, Robinsons here in Cebu is such a hassle to go into. BTW, this is my own opinion, Chaoz & Blitz might not agree with me.

True, but aside from deparment stores, Toy Kingdom is the biggest toy store here in Cebu.

Yeah, that's why I'm not really excited about it. They probably just bought the Toys R' Us name and probably the marketing, management systems and other strategies unique to TRU. We'll probably just see the same toys around and no Transformers like now, and just have a huge Toys' R Us above and a new layout. It's better feeling like this and be overcome with glee when I'm wrong then hyping myself up for a possibly huge letdown.

Ditto to cmdrjanjalani. I've been to Toys R Us Singapore.......nothing much to see in their stocks. Remember back in 2002 Feb, been looking all over the island for a RID Prime and God magnus. want to know where I found one? In an independent store not much different from Malvins. All I could find were RIDs Megatron in TRU. Heck, even their video game selections were dull.

Taiwan, Hongkong and Japan though, that may be a different thing. Toy Kingdom should either shape up and sell their wares in a justifiable return on investment scheme.

Example....PS2 games....Data Blitz Rumble Roses Php 2,500.00, while TK Php 3,800.00....WTF?
If TRU does the same, then who are they fooling then?
