Just got this off the inquirer website:
"JAMES Go, chairman of the Robinsons retailing group, and Victor Fung, chairman of the Li and Fung group of Hong Kong, will announce this Wednesday details of their agreement to open Philippine branches of the American store chain Toys R Us in select Robinsons malls."
Great news! With any luck, the added competition may even help to bring down the prices of toys locally. Let's just hope that the inventory they bring in will differ from what we can already get from the likes of the other toystores.

Just a question? Will Toys R' Us be their own toy distributors or will they still depend on Bankee, Smarties and Metrotoys for their inventory? If they still will make use of them, wouldn't that mean that we'll still have pretty much the same inventory? If not, will we have access to TRU exclusive toys as well.

Hmmm... I think this will only click in those big Robinson Malls. I don't think Cebu will get a branch. SGP

There could be reason to hope. The Li&Fung Group that Robinson's is partnering with is a HUGE, if not the biggest supply chain and distribution company in Asia. Assuming they'll be taking care of the distribution, that could open up a lot of possibilities! As for me, as much as I'm hopeful, we'll just have to wait and see.

I would agree with you that the toystores here carry the basic toylines as compared to TRU HK. However, I have noticed a big difference in terms of variety and sheer bulk of the stuff brought in. For example, the regular Microman figures never made it here. They are available in TRU HK. Again, the toystores here didn't carry the Star wars ARC-170 and the Republic Gunship. I guess this all boils down to the fact that the distributors here like Bankee and Playkit are the ones who decide what toys to bring in. In contrast, assuming that the Gokongweis use different distribution channels, most likely the same channels provided by the Li&Fung group, they could in fact leverage on economies of scale and bring in more diverse and much larger inventories. Again, these are purely speculative but it is very plausible.

that would be great news, if the Gokongweis push through with that! it's kinda tiring to see all the same toys over and over again! btw, why can't cartoon network show the good cartoons (e.g transformers armada & energon). my balik bayan friends who visited the P.I again were suprised! para daw super "jolog" naman cartoon network dito. they watch the old skul 80's cartoons from where they came from (M.A.S.K, Jaycee and the Wheeled Warriors, Thundercats, Bionic Six, etc etc). Bakit kaya? anyway, sana matuloy nga yung plans...that would be nice!
